Strong was the physical training instructor of the 1st Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment, when it was trapped, outnumbered 20 to 1, by the Chinese in April 1951.
Strong was part of a column of some 350 men and, although exhausted himself, continually moved up and down the line, urging them to keep going and not to lose heart.
Strong's service in Korea, according to his citation, was "of the highest order; he worked unceasingly, behaved courageously and displayed an example of loyalty, discipline and devotion to duty".

He was 19 years old, and a private in the Coldstream Guards, British Army during the Crimean War, when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
In September 1855, at Sebastopol, in the Crimea, when on duty, Private Strong picked up a live shell which had fallen into the trench, and threw it over the parapet.
He was well aware of the extreme danger involved, and his action saved many lives.
