  George T. Emmons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Thornton Emmons (June 6, 1852 – June 11, 1945) was an ethnographic photographer and a U.S. Navy Lieutenant.
Emmons got stationed in 1882 on the Pinta in Alaska and stayed there through the 1880s and 1890s.
Through his duties, Emmons got in contact with, and interested in, the Alaska Native cultures of the region: particularly the Tlingit and Tahltan.

Emmons sailed from Norfolk 31 January 1942 on her shakedown to Callao, Peru, where she embarked Peruvian officers for Valparaiso, Chile, returning to Boston via several ports in Ecuador.
Emmons returned to New York 9 September 1942 and trained in Casco and Chesapeake Bays, and at Bermuda, for the invasion of north Africa, for which she sailed from Bermuda 26 October.
Emmons returned to Mers-el-Kebir 10 July 1944 with a transport convoy she had brought across from Portland, then had escort duty in the Mediterranean ports preparing for the assault on southern France.

Emmons was united in marriage to Miss Augusta C. Peck, a daughter of Heman (sic) T. and Helen E. (Root) Peck.

I, (Lt. Emmons), explained to the police officials the purpose of my visit was to gather enough information of fraudulent practices and other crimes committed by Scientology to present to the Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement as a prosecutable package.
Emmons and Chief Klein conferred on how to proceed in the presentation of the Scientology case to the appropriate agencies, i.e., the Florida Dept.

George Foster Emmons, born 23 August 1811 in Clarendon, Vt., began his distinguished career as a midshipman I April 1828.
Emmons returned to New York 9 September 1942, and trained in Casco and Chesapeake Bays, and at Bermuda, for the invasion of north Africa, for which she sailed from Bermuda 25 October.
She then took up picket duty, and on 6 April, during one of the first of the massive kamikazee attacks, was a target as she sailed with Rodman (DMS-21).

George Foster Emmons, born 23 August 1811 in Clarendon, VT., began his distinguished career as a midshipman 1 April 1828.
During the next 21/2 months, Emmons joined in patrolling northern waters, guarding the movement of convoys across the North Atlantic, unceasingly alerted against the possible sortie of German ships from Norwegian bases.
Between December 1943 and April l944, Emmons guarded carriers during their operations at Newport and in Casco Bay, aiding in the training of aviators.

 Haida Canoe
Canoes were an essential part of life for the Indians of this area, and were used for traveling to ceremonies, for trade, and for war.
In this display, created in 1910 by George T. Emmons, who explored the Northwest Coast for the Museum, the Indians are depicted arriving at a potlatch -- a grand ceremonial feast.
The two men with long poles at the front, as well as the paddlers on the sides, are captured slaves.

The copper was made of a large flat sheet of beaten metal cut in the shape of a flared shield, with a T shaped ridge beaten onto the lower portion.
The origin of the copper's enigmatic form has been postulated by scholars such as Lt. George T. Emmons, though its true development is unknown.
The arms of the T, as was customary, form a shallow inverted V in cross-section, although they have been somewhat flattened out when riveted to the flat sheet below.

January 9,1868.Letter From the Secretary of War, Ad Interim, in Answer to A resolution of the House of December 5, 1867, transmitting a report of General George H. Thomas relative to one Milliken, a returned rebel, arrested for violation of his parole.
Milliken was a 'citizen of Tennessee, a paroled rebel soldier, charged with having violated his parole.' He was arrested in Tennessee for threatening Union men and Negroes at the polling places during the August 1867 local elections.
The photos, obviously taken as a hobby, range in size from 3 very small ones, 2 1/4" x 2 3/4" to some 8 x 10"s; the majority are from 3+" x 4+ -5+" All are mounted in an album; many have the name of the train or railroad line handwritten underneath.

Collected from a Kaigani Haida village in Alaska circa 1900 by George T. Emmons.
Although Chilkat blankets have many design variations, the most favoured one on those owned by the Haida is a double-profile view of Konankada in the guise of a Killer Whale, flanked by two profile Ravens.
This design, according to George T. Emmons, is a reference to the first potlatch in the world, which was given by Konankada in honour of the Raven.

From The Totem Poles and Monuments of Gitwangak Village by George MacDonald, 1984
The pole was first photographed in 1910 by George T. Emmons for the Museum of the American Indian.
It was recorded in a painting entitled Totem Poles, Kitseukla by Emily Carr in 1912 (now owned by the Vancouver Art Gallery).
