The Sabine River drains the southern part of Wood County and forms its southern boundary, and a tributary of the river, Lake Fork Creek, drains the central portion of the county.
Wood County remained during the years 1870 to 1920 as it was during the antebellum years, overwhelmingly agricultural and rural.
The town grew from a population of 333 in 1880 to 2,184 in 1920.

George Tyler Wood was a soldier, a state legislator, and the second governor of the state of Texas.
Wood's defeat was due in large measure to his failure to resolve the New Mexico dispute and to the strong opposition of anti-Houston forces in the state, who viewed Wood as a Houston man. He was again defeated in a bid for reelection in 1853.
Wood County and Woodville, the county seat of Tyler County, are named for him.

She is survived by sons George, Harry, Walter and Howard; daughters Alice Sekiguchi, Helen Suh, Pearl Juan and Esther Umeno;  brothers Shigeru and Motoaki Goto; sisters Toshi Hirano, Tsuki Kato, Toki Suzuki  and Mildred Higashihara, 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

There are letters describing James George's Mexican War career and a manuscript on his Civil War career as a colonel in the Second Minnesota Regiment.
James George's letters (1840-1846) are largely love-letters, but those from 1846 describe his Mexican War service, beginning with his voyage from Ohio to New Orleans, thence into Mexico, and ending in September with a description of the Battle of Monterey.
Also included is his manuscript describing James George's Civil War experiences, particularly his recruitment of men from Wasioja for the Second Minnesota Regiment and their subsequent actions in the war.

In the year 1796, Bartholomew T. Wood, an immigrant from North Carolina, stopped his “mover’s wagon” at the east fork of Little River, at the point still known as Wood’s Mill, and camped for the night.
After investigating locations for three months, the Wood site with its big spring among others, the committee reported November 21, 1797, and the court made an order fixing the seat of government at the Rock Spring and the village was named Elizabeth, which was changed seven years later to Hopkinsyule.
Wood donated four acres of ground to the town.

His name was George T. He was born in the mid-1790's, and was raised and lived in Cuthbert.
Of course, Randolph County was not created until 1828, but I would think the records in the courthouse at Cuthbert would have information on his father.
George T. moved to Texas with his family and his mother in the late 1830's.

Henderson county originally included all of what is now Kaufman, Rockwall, Van Zandt, Wood and the major portion of Rains Counties.(4) Henderson County was created on April 27, 1846 from the Nacogdoches Municipality.
In 1850, Wood County, (named for Governor George T. Wood), was created from Van Zandt County, therefore, Jordan's Saline, (Grand Saline), was no longer the geographical center of the county, resulting in the selection of a new site for the county seat.
