SIR WILLIAM FRANCIS PATRICK NAPIER - LoveToKnow Article on SIR WILLIAM FRANCIS PATRICK NAPIER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Napier always wrote as if he was burning with an inextinguishable desire to express what he was feeling, which gives his style a peculiar spontaneity, and yet he rewrote the first volume of his History no less than six times.
In January 1860 Napier was appointed to the command of the 2nd division of the expedition to China under Sir Hope Grant, and took part in the action of Sinho, the storm of the Peiho forts, and the entry to Peking.
For the next four years Napier was military member of the council of the governor-general of India and, on the sudden death of Lord Elgin, for a short time acted as governor-general, until the arrival of Sir W. Denison from Madras.

 Sir Charles Napier (1782-1853)
Napier was five times wounded: his leg was broken by a musket shot, he received a sabre cut on the head, a bayonet wound in the back, severe contusions from the butt end of a musket, and his ribs were broken by a gunshot.
Napier then suddenly sallied forth in three columns, moved by forced marches, surprised the tribes, captured thousands of cattle, most of their grain supply, forced the enemy into the hills, and waited at the entrances to the passes for his guns and commissariat.
Napier ordered that the native officers, non-commissioned officers, and private sepoys of the 66th regiment should be marched to Ambala, and there struck off the rolls, and that the colours should be delivered to the loyal men of the Nasiri Ghurkha battalion, who should in future be called the 66th or Ghurka regiment.

 Napier.html
Napier was born in 1610 in Scotland, "one of the many children" of Robert Napier, son of the most famous of all the Napiers, John of Merchiston, "the celebrated inventor of the logarithms," of "John of Logs," for short.
Napier sold this land on 1 January 1717 to Nicholas Cox of Charles City County and we see the unique signature (copied by the clerk) RNapier for the first time (the R and N joined by one stroke of the pen), differentiating it from the signature of his son of the same name.
Napier is seem to be the real progenitor of the family in Virginia, since he was the only male child of his parents, and had a much larger progeny than his father.

 George Butterworth
Shield himself was a seconded member (due to Borghi’s illness) for the Professional Concert season of 1789, playing viola in Haydn’s Op.54 quartets (received in manuscript from the composer himself) as well as new quartets and concertantes by Pleyel.
The dedicatee of the Op.3 set, George seventh baron Kinnaird, a Scottish representative peer, was an active patron of the arts and possibly noticed Shield as a promising Northerner; his son Douglas was a friend of Byron.
The Op.3 quartets were written with a string player’s grasp of textural matters, particularly in the phrasing and articulation of themes and the transparency of parts which offers rewarding activity to each individual player.
