 The Journey Zone
George Tickner's name has been resurfacing a lot lately, mostly in connection with Ross Valory's Hive, a private studio in Northern California.
Often referred to as Journey's "forgotten member", Tickner's role in the early formation of the band is being revisited lately due to the resurgence of Neal Schon and Ross Valory's importance in the decision-making process of the band.
Tickner may make a guest appearance with his former band-mates, either in a new studio track, live on the road, or at a potential thirtieth reunion of the original Journey in December, 2003.

Journey (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Herbert was able to get George Tickner (guitar) and Ross Valory (former bassist for the Steve Miller Band) who were at the time playing in Frumious Bandersnatch (another band that Herbie managed) to join Schon and form a new band.
Tickner was leaning toward very progressive material, material that was probably not commercially viable, but was pushing musical boundaries.
Guitarist George Tickner was tired from touring and left the band by the time of their second album, Look into the Future (1976), which toned down a little the overt progressiveness of their first release but still retained a jazz fusion base.

 Welcome to George Tickner Online
George Tickner, alongside Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Prairie Prince and managerial genius Herbie Herbert, was one of the founding members of the legendary San Francisco Bay Area Classic Rock band Journey.
Although George was only with Journey from it's inception in 1973, through the release of their self-titled debut album in 1975, he was an integral part in the band's original sound and vibe and his influence has been imprinted all over Journey's style and sound ever since.
This site is a direct reflection of the same vision and creative genius that is so evident in George's compositions and will serve as a window into the life and career of the man and legend of George Tickner.

Rolie and Schon were itching to record their own music however, and after George Tickner and Ross Valory were recruited away from Frumious Bandersnatch, along with The Tubes' drummer Prairie Prince, the full band began playing together and recorded a demo.
According to Gregg Rolie, the initial songwriting was done by George Tickner who "came up with chordings I have never heard." As the band started gaining momentum, Prairie Prince decided to stay with The Tubes and veteran drummer Aynsley Dunbar was asked to join the group.
Tickner compositions would pop up on the next couple of Journey albums however.

Actually I'm of the opinion that Tickner and Gregg Rolie may have been huge factors in taking on a progressive songwriting attitude on this disc, since the band slowly departed from this approach on their following releases.
Tickner not only supports the amazing Neal Schon, laying down choppy lead work, but he also wrote the instrumental track "Topaz", punctuated by deft acoustic passages and big synth washes.
On this song, he goes from slowly building arpeggios to jaw-dropping whammy bar usage and finally fierce lead soloing as he is eventually joined by George Tickner for a full-on guitar attack in the outro.

Founded in 1973 in San Francisco around former Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, with the assistance of Ross Valory, George Tickner and Prairie Prince, Journey’s legacy has spanned over 30 years with 18 U.S. releases and over 75,000,000 in album sales.
Journey’s initial style was progressive jazz-rock, complete with extended and improvised solo spots, a style much in evidence on their first three albums for Columbia Records.
Not only was the entire current line-up in attendance (guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, singer Steve Augeri and drummer Deen Castronovo), but several band members from the past as well: drummers Steve Smith and Aynsley Dunbar, guitarist George Tickner and singer Robert Fleischman.

Their first three albums - Journey, Look Into the Future and Next – were some of the high points in the San Francisco Bay area music scene from 1975 to 1978.
Formed by Aynsley Dunbar, Gregg Rolie, Neil Schon, George Tickner and Ross Valory in 1975, Journey was one of the new breed of bands that were influenced by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa and Carlos Santana.
Soon Tickner left the band and the “classic” Journey lineup proceeded to make a name for themselves, although at a much slower pace than they would have liked.
