The victorious chief took the name George when he was baptized in the Wesleyan faith, in honor of the King of England.
When proclaimed the king in 1845, he became George Tupou I. Known as the father of modern Tonga, the king outlawed the worship of old gods and established a constitutional monarchy.
George Tupou II was succeeded by his 18-year-old daughter, Salote.

George Tupou I (1797-1893 (known until 1875) as Siaosi Taufa'ahau Tupou Maeakafaua), was the king of Tonga from November 18, 1845 until February 18, 1893.
On November 4, 1875, Tonga officially became a kingdom, and Siaosi changed his name to George Tupou I. (but referred to also as Siaosi Taufa'ahau Tupou).
During his war campaigne to unify all of Tonga, he almost stumbled into his doom at one of his battles at the Ha'apai Groups.

Tupou II’s reign was, unfortunately beset with a multiplicity of problems causing serious internal dissension particularly during the first decade and a half of his twenty-five year rule from 1893 to 1918.
Although the Constitution was somehow overshadowed by the 1900 Treaty and its 1905 Supplement during Tupou II’s reign, it remained a significant guide to both sides especially in the administration of the internal affairs of the Kingdom, and British officials still appealed to it whenever it suited them.
The improvement in the relationship between British officials and the Tongan government which began towards the end of Tupou II’s reign, was marked.
