Revolver - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
There is a rare class of revolvers, the automatic revolver, that attempts to overcome this restriction, giving the high speed of a double action with the trigger effort of a single action.
The Webley Fosbery automatic revolver was the first commercial example, introduced in 1901.
It was recoil operated, and the cylinder and barrel recoiled backwards to cock the hammer and revolve the cylinder.

Classic Test: Webley-Fosberry By Garry James   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Fosbery, whose military career spanned some 25 years, was also an inveterate firearms tinkerer, coming up with such things as a distinctive "Paradox" rifling system and explosive projectiles.
The Fosbery's safety consisted of a lever at the top of the grip which, when pushed downward, moved the upper part of the frame to the rear, taking the gun out of battery and rendering it inoperable.
In fact, all Fosberys are hot with vintage gun enthusiasts right now, and it is not uncommon for average specimens to bring upwards of $3,000.

 The Webley Fosbery 'Automatic' Revolver
With the view in mind that the revolvers primacy as a service weapon was under threat and even possibly coming to an end Colonel George Vincent Fosbery V.C. adapted a Webley service revolver to an automatic indexing and self-cocking weapon.
In essence the Fosbery is a single action weapon but only in the same way that, for example the Government model by Colt is. The action of the weapon involves the whole of the upper frame moving to cock the hammer ready for the next round.
The Webley Fosbery design is over 100 years old but its fascination and the imagination and ingenuity behind it lives on.
