George Grossmith (December 9, 1847 – March 1, 1912) was an English comedian, writer, actor, and singer, best remembered for his work with Gilbert and Sullivan and for writing the comic novel (with his brother Weedon) Diary of a Nobody.
George Grossmith was born in London, the son of a lecturer, entertainer and court reporter also named George Grossmith.
George Grossmith died in Folkestone, Kent in 1912.

George, English comedian and singer, and his younger brother, Weedon, an actor and playwright, are perhaps best known for their co-authored novel - an understated satire on the mores of English Victorian society - Diary of a Nobody (1892).
George, who also wrote and published two autobiographical works: A Society Clown: Reminiscences (1884) and Piano and I: Further Remembrances (1910), was also the creator of many of the original characters from the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas.
George was educated at the North London Collegiate School for boys and then worked with his father at Bow Street court until 1869.

A Brigadier General in the Continental Army, George Weedon served under the immediate command of his fellow Virginian George Washington from, 1776 until 1778.
This orderly book was kept under Weedon's command during the fall and winter, 1777-1778, documenting the hardships suffered by the American soldiers during their bitter encampment at Valley Forge.
A veteran of the French and Indian War and associate of George Washington, the Virginian George Weedon became an ardent proponent to the revolutionary cause.

The short answer to this question is that the Grossmith brothers, George and Weedon, wrote it in collaboration, the exact nature of which will never be known.
It is usually assumed that George, familiarly known in theatrical circles as 'GG' or 'Gee Gee,' wrote all the text and Weedon ('Wee-Gee'), an artist and later an actor and playwright, drew the illustrations for the book version.
According to Weedon's much later recollections, however, they 'did not see so very much of each other,' as he was painting in a studio during the day and, like his brother, acting in the evening.

He became lieutenant-colonel of the 3d Virginia regiment in February, 1776, and in August of the same year was transferred with the same rank to the 1st Virginia regiment.
He was commissioned brigadier-general, 23 February, 1777, participated in the battles of the Brandywine and Germantown, in the former battle supporting the brigade in General Nathanael Greene's division that rendered valuable service in arresting the British pursuit and rallying the routed army.
In consequence of a question of supremacy in rank with General William Wood-ford, Weedon retired from the service shortly after the battle of Germantown, but he resumed the command of a brigade in 1780, and during the siege of Yorktown in October, 1781, was in charge of the Virginia militia at Gloucester.

George Grossmith was born in London in 1847—and curiously, like W. Gilbert, he spent time early in his career as a courtroom journalist.

It made its first appearance in 1888 as a series of instalments in Punch magazine, was expanded into a book in 1892 - George wrote the words and Weedon did the drawings - and has never been out of print since.

He plundered Virginia's countryside (necessitating this request for safe passage) before dying of typhoid fever in May 1781, less than two months later.
GEORGE WEEDON had served in Virginia regiments in the New York and New Jersey campaigns before being promoted to Brigadier General.
Congress never officially accepted his resignation, and Weedon returned to service when the British invaded Virginia in 1781, commanding the Virginia Militia during the siege of Yorktown.
