GEORGE WILLIAM FREDERICK VILLIERS, CLARENDON 4TH Earl or (in the Villiers line) (1800-1870), English diplomatist and statesman, was born in London on the 12th of January 1800.
She married Thomas Villiers (1709-1786), second son of the 2nd earl of Jersey, who served with distinction as English minister in Germany, and in 1776 the earldom of Clarendon was revived in his favour.
Villiers received the grand cross of the Bath in 1838 in acknowledgment of his services, and succeeded, on the death of his uncle, to the title of earl of Clarendon; in the following year, having left Madrid, he married Katharine, eldest daughter of James Walter, first earl of Verulam.

Named after George William Frederick Villiers 4th Earl of Clarendon, it has been claimed this house was built in c.1820, although there are doubts about the accuracy of this.
The first reference to the Clarendon by name is in the 1871 census, with Henry Couchman, who lived at Newington until c.1861, as landlord.
Mr Bryne was a George Medal holder, although at the house until 1989 there is some doubt that he ever agreed to accept the award.

Included are twelve letters from the earl of Clarendon to Jane Porter, 1841-1848, about her affairs after the death of Sir Robert Ker Porter.
Some of the letters were written after Clarendon's appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland during the Great Famine, 1847, discussing the conditions there, together with nine letters, 1843-1850, of his wife Katherine also discussing the situation in Ireland.

Earl of Clarendon, served as Foreign Secretary in four administrations, intermittently from 1853 to 1870.
The United States and Great Britain were partners in a profitable transatlantic trade, but Britain began to have concerns about American expansionism, especially American filibusters in Nicaragua and other areas throughout South and Central America.
Clarendon did not serve during the Civil War, but believed Southern independence was assured.
