"GEORGE VON LENGERKE MEYER (1858-1918), American diplomatist, was born in Boston, Mass., June 24 1858.
After graduating from Harvard in 1879 he was engaged in business for 20 years.
He was a director in many organizations, including the Amoskeag Manufacturing Co., Old Colony Trust Co., Puget Sound Light and Power Co., Walter Baker Co., and Ames Plow Co. He died in Boston March 9 1918.

The Meyer Gate, erected in 1901, is named for George von Lengerke Meyer, Class of 1879, who paid for its construction.
An inscription surrounding the carving gives Meyer's name and records in Latin, the fact that he was a Bostonian and a member of the Class of 1879.

This watercolor shows the temple in Macao where the first Sino-American treaty was signed in July 1844 clarifying the status of Americans in China and granting to the United States commercial privileges equal to those afforded to Great Britain.
Drawn by George R. West, the item is in the papers of Caleb Cushing, the first American emissary to China, who negotiated the treaty.
For example, in a 1792 letter, David Humphreys, the American "minister resident" in Lisbon, Portugal, and a former aide-de-camp to George Washington, recommended to the American minister in Paris, Gouverneur Morris, that the United States assist the new revolutionary French government, then threatened with invasion by Austria and Prussia.
