Georges Bernanos was the literary landscaper par excellence; his descriptions of the French countryside, are part and substance of the whole vision which he had of God and man.
Landscape and description in Bernanos mirror the mood of his people, for the hills, the deserted roads, the waving poplars, and the winds of the night are to him beautiful or hideous according to the ironic experiences of his day's rounds among the parishioners.
Bernanos, son of France, has studied not only the image of Christ Crucified Whom he endeavors to portray in the vision he gives us of men dedicated solely to God, but obviously he has also studied the contributing geographical and physical backgrounds which he weaves masterfully into the fabric of his writing.
