Lefebvre, G.; Palmer, R.R., et al., trans.: The Coming of the French Revolution.
In 1939, in observation of the 150th anniversary of the French Revolution, and on the eve of the Second World War, the great French historian Georges Lefebvre published this classic study of the beginnings of the French Revolution, from the summer of 1788 to October 1789.
Lefebvre's signature contribution was writing history "from below"--a Marxist approach--and his particular specialty was the French Revolution as viewed from the experiences of the peasantry.
Georges Lefebvre (1874-1959) was one of the major twentieth-century historians of the French Revolution.

Georges Lefebvre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lefebvre was influenced by the Marxist idea that all of history relates to the conditions of the working class, as manipulated by the upper class; however, he was primarily an historian, not a polemicist, and he saw history in its full complexity: as an interplay of social, economic and political factors.
Lefebvre's account of the origins of the French Revolution was written in Quatre-Vingt-Neuf, and published in 1939 to mark the sesquicentennial of the events of 1789, but the Vichy government that took over the following year wanted no left-wing history or sympathetic understanding of the Revolution, as they drew their support from the anti-republican right.
The régime suppressed the book, ordering 8,000 copies to be burned; as a result the work was virtually unknown in its native land until it was reprinted in 1970.

Professor Lefebvre was a well-known and in his time a pre-¬eminent bourgeois historian of the French Revolution.
Professor LeFebvre documents this trend very well, especially in the case of the peasantry which he had special knowledge of and charted throughout his academic career.
Lefebvre's Marxist analysis of the event (the dominant interpretation until recently) may appear archaic to contemporary readers.
