Georges Leygues class frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Georges Leygues class ("F70 type") is a type of anti-submarine frigates of the French Navy.
They are polyvalent, due to their Exocet and Crotale missile complement, making them especially suitable for defense of strategic positions, demonstrations, or highseas escorts.
The F70 is internationally labelled an "anti-submarine destroyer" (hence the "D" in the hull numbers), though the French don't use the term and refer to the ships as "frigates".

The Soviet Navy has undergone a most remarkable expansion during the postwar years under the inspired guidance of Admiral Gorschkov, one of the greatest naval administrators in history, who envisaged a Soviet Navy which could at least hold its own with the navies of the West, if not actuallyattain superiority.
Faced with this new Soviet threat the US Navy decided to refurbish and recommission all four of its Iowa class battleships, which were still in excellent condition and which are now in the process of being returned to service.
Indeed, their armour makes them relatively immune to anti-ship missiles, and while it seems very doubtful that any new battleship of the size and complexity of the Iowas will be built, nobody had expected the Soviet Navy to build something like the Kirov.

The most significant factor in the new group was full provision for under way replenishment (UNREP) using both alongside and over-the-stern techniques.  Chinese crews quickly developed a very high degree of proficiency in using this equipment, impressing US Navy observers with their ability to conduct UNREP operations in heavy seas and while at high speed.

Frigates are mainly used for picket patrols where you speed up a while and then slow down to use you sonar more effectively.
Their "slow" speed (29 knots max in each case) does not prevent them from operating with the carriers at all: they are relatively fast when compared to the AOR that accompanies the battlegroup to refuel and replenish the escorts.
