Attempts to establish a railroad for Cherokee County had been made as early as 1846 when the Etowah Railroad was chartered by the state legislature, but never built.
The present Woodstock Depot was built in 1912 by the L&N Railroad to serve as a passenger and freight depot.

Northeastern Railroad stock owned by the City of Athens was purchased by the Richmond and Danville in 1881; the RandD leased the 61-mile line in 1886.

In 1987, as part of a complicated sale involving rail lines in Georgia and Tennessee, the Georgia Northeastern, a new short line, acquired from CSX 68 miles of former Louisville and Nashville track between Marietta and Ellijay.
In August 1990, the Georgia Northeastern was sold (minus the Tennessee trackage) to Wilds Pierce, an Atlanta businessman and owner of Railcar Management, Inc.
In the mid-1990s, the Georgia Department of Transportation purchased the line north of Ellijay and began working with Georgia Northeastern to put these long-neglected tracks back to use.

Built between the 1870's and the 1890's the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad brought unparalleled growth to the towns it touched, from Woodstock and Canton to Ellijay and Blue Ridge.
