He was also the first president of the Central Railroad and Banking Company (later the Central of Georgia Railway), the corporation that constructed the first rail line connecting the port of Savannah with the cotton-growing interior of the state.
The construction of a railroad from Savannah to the interior became crucial to the economy of Georgia in 1833, when South Carolina completed a 136-mile rail line from the port of Charleston to Hamburg, a town directly across the Savannah River from Augusta.
In 1833 the legislature granted charters to three railroad companies, including the Central Railroad and Canal Company of Georgia, which in 1835, after banking powers were granted to railroad companies, became the Central of Georgia Railroad and Banking Company.

In the 1950s the Georgia state banking laws changed to limit banking consolidations across city and county lines, and bank mergers slowed until the 1970s, when acquisition of banks across county lines was again permitted.
The Atlanta National Bank charter remained operative until interstate banking legislation, passed by Congress in the 1990s, allowed bank holding companies to merge multiple bank charters into a single banking organization, and the Atlanta National charter was surrendered in favor of the charter of Wachovia Bank.
This charter was extended in 1870, and in 1890 the bank charter was transferred to the Georgia Railroad Bank.

The Georgia Railroad fell under common management with the Atlanta and West Point Railroad and the Western Railway of Alabama.
These were later merged with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and the Clinchfield Railroad to form the Family Lines System.

I could use this poster to show another side of the railroad fight all around the country, because I believe that if the North through a fit about the railroads, I’m sure there were some people that did the same.
