Georgia & Verdana - typefaces for the screen - www.will-harris.com
Georgia is nothing short of wonderful on-screen--which is, of course, the whole point.
To make the fonts work in extended text settings it was necessary to open up the counters more, widen the advance widths and loosen the spacing.
Just as the Verdana fonts have their origins in Windows, the Georgia fonts were conceived for the then nascent Microsoft Network as a serif alternative to Times.

Usability News - 4.1 2002 -- A Comparison of Popular Online Fonts: Which Size and Type is Best?
Currently, text that is viewed on computer screens consist of an amalgamation of both serif and sans serif fonts that were designed specifically for computer use, as well as those that were originally intended for print (serif fonts cross-strokes that project from the main stroke of a letter, whereas sans serif fonts do not).
It is possible that Georgia and Times were considered attractive because of their widespread use in both print and on computer screens (Times also serves as the primary default for Microsoft Office™ software suites) and, thus, participants were more familiar with this type of font.
Fonts at the 12-point size were read faster than fonts at the 10-point size.

Fonts at the 10-point size were read more slowly than fonts at the 12-point size (see Figure 1).
In this study, serif fonts (Georgia and Times New Roman) were compared to sans serif fonts (Arial and Verdana) at 12- and 14-points.
This may be due to the fact that 12-point font sizes and above tend to produce the same level of performance, as long as the font types are designed for legibility.

HTML E-Mail: Text Font Readability Study
However, my results showed that Georgia is not available on as many computers as Times New Roman or Arial, since the "could not distinguish" response was significant.
While Georgia seemed to be substantially more readable than Times New Roman, the number of users that did not have Georgia font installed on their computer seemed to be significant at 15%.
Another font that Microsoft developed to increase screen readability is Verdana, and it seems to be much more widespread among computer users, even Mac users, than Georgia.

Usability News - 2.2 - 2000 -- So, What Size and Type of Font Should I Use on My Website?
The 12-point Arial font was the most preferred (though not significantly preferred over the 12-point TNR font) and was perceived as being the most legible and sharpest font by the participants.
The 12-point TNR font, however, was the fastest font to read, was the second to most preferred (along with 12-point anti-aliased font), and was perceived as the second to most legible.
One reason for this could be that at smaller font sizes on computer screens, the serifs stop acting as distinguishers and start becoming visual 'noise.' Moreover, small anti-aliased fonts may create even more visual noise because of the smoothing effects of the anti-aliased font.

Georgia and Trebuchet MS are bundled with Windows 2000/XP and they are also included in the IE font pack (and bundled with other MS applications), so they are quite common in Windows 98 systems.
Symbolic fonts are only displayed in Internet Explorer, in other browsers a font substitute is used instead (although the Symbol font does work in Opera and the Webdings works in Safari).
These fonts are not TrueType fonts but bitmap fonts, so they won't look well when using some font sizes (they are designed for 8, 10, 12, 14, 18 and 24 point sizes at 96 DPI).

 Times vs. Georgia
Georgia is a modern serif font that was designed specifically for onscreen legibility, as was Verdana (often misread as Veranda).
Georgia was jokingly named after a tabloid headline "Alien heads found in Georgia." If you must have one serif face for reading on a computer, then you've found the best one right here.
Another reason for the legibility of these fonts on the screen is their generous width and spacing.

Web Page Design for Designers – Editorial July 2004
When you specify a font family like this, the browser will use the first font that it comes to in the list that is actually installed on the user's computer.
These 'pixel' fonts won't be installed on the user's machine so you have to make them into small GIF or PNG images, but if they are used sparingly and the images saved at low bit depths, their bytesize will be very small.
Pixel fonts do not use anti-aliasing so they remain sharp and crisp at tiny sizes but they are not scaleable and can only be used at their optimal 'designed' size.

Next came the face> tag (something you use if you're writing HTML by hand instead of using a program such as NetObjects Fusion that does it for you), which allows site designers to specify what font the browser should display.
Georgia: This serif face is much easier to read on screen than Times New Roman because it was designed for the screen, whereas Times was designed for paper (in the 1920s!).
Because of that, the face> tag allows you to specify a list of fonts to use in case the visitor's computer doesn't have the first one.

Lebreux's assertion that serif fonts are "certainly not [easier to read] on a computer monitor," the jury is still out on this one.
Nonserif fonts are also a slower read (at least, on paper, and I don't know why a monitor would be different), and should only be used in headlines.
The way you "let readers choose their own version" for your site, at least as far as the font is concerned, is to not specify a font at all, and let the reader's browser settings take over.

Although inspired by the need for, and providing, clarity at low resolutions on the screen, Georgia is a typeface resonant with typographic personality.
This is as much testament to the skill of the typeface's designer, Matthew Carter, as it is to any intrinsic quality of the face’s design, since the small pixel spaces of the screen can be a harrowing canvas for any type designer.
In Georgia, Carter has successfully managed to create a typeface family which combines high legibility with character and charm.

Well this first study seemed to show that a sans serif font was preferable, but maybe it was too soon to draw a conclusion, and one important aspect was the particular serif font used.
Now Georgia had been developed specifically for screen readability by well-known typography experts hired by Microsoft, so the assumption was that it would overwhelmingly outperform Times New Roman.
Two, although the Georgia typeface was designed for computer-screen readability, it isn't widely enough installed to justify using it with his readers.

If you set the font size to 1ex, then in theory the height of the uppercase letters will then be equal to the height of the lowercase “x” if the font size had not been specified at all.
Georgia tries to counterbalance this by fat strokes which can properly dominate over the serifs in the type face, and that works reasonably well, but it also means that at low point sizes the font looks chunky and smeary, and is much less readable than a sans-serif font at the same size.
Fonts (and character sets) are a weakness of mine — one I can’t seem to wrap my mind around, though I usually have no problem with technology.

The font is simply too large compared with other fonts on the Windows system (I have read somewhere that Verdana is smaller on a Macintosh), which is why it has to be toned down to about 80% to look right in proportion to other fonts.
Of course, when a browser does fall back to 'sans-serif' if Verdana is not present on a system, the user will need to increase his font-size to about 120% to make the page look comparable to the Verdana design.

Mozilla appears to be bit more aggressive—even if you have a font applied, Mozilla checks, for each character displayed, to see if the current font has a glyph for that character, and if it doesn't, it finds a font that does.
This feature of Mozilla means that you often don't need to apply a font to a character in an odd range, as long as your audience is guaranteed to be using Mozilla.
