Jack Schwartzman / The Moral and Ethical Basis of Georgism
The basic moral philosophy of Georgism is that justice (the rendering to each person his or her due) underlies the principles of political science (economics).
To be specific: Georgism examines the current scene and finds that the social malady exists because of people's failure to abide by the laws of "natural" distribution of production.
To "cure" the economic ills of humanity, Georgism unqualifiedly advocates the removal of the "unnatural" conditions of poverty, conflict, crime, and illiteracy by means of a specific formula based on natural law.

Oscar B. Johannsen / Georgism: True Libertarianism
Georgism recognizes that all men have equal rights to any and all of the opportunities of the earth in order that they may develop their faculties -- intellectual, artistic, and moral -- to the optimum degree they desire.
In other words, Georgism advocates the individual's freedom to act, so as to avail himself of the opportunities of the earth, always, of course, with due regard to the right of others also so to act.
Thus, Georgism could be considered synonymous with present-day libertarianism except for one essential fact: Libertarian thought, if carried to its logical conclusion, implies the establishment of a stateless society.

Georgism in Australia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Georgism was part of the movement that gave these new classes their identity and representation.
Georgism was crucially important in this transition, in influencing both the ways in which the freetrade and protectionist parties replaced the earlier factions, and then in turn how those parties were replaced by Labor and anti-Labor (as for convenience I must summarise the liberal and conservative parties for the moment).
In summary of the first decade, Georgism was everywhere evident as a political and social creed but it was not, or was not yet, a political party; and already perhaps the developments that were to rule out that possibility were gaining strength.

 Critique of Georgism
Type III Georgism seems to be based (at least in part) on principles like P3, wherein not only private owners but also common owners are entitled to reap the benefits of their ownership — and in which it is assumed that common ownership will at least sometimes be the most efficient form of ownership.
It is indeed a general rule under Georgism that landholders will wish to reduce the positive externalities their properties emit and increase the negative externalities as much as they can get away with, because by doing so they reduce their own exposure to the single tax.
Georgism itself seems at best morally arbitrary and sadly prone to the espousal of morally objectionable demands; in its theory it is incoherent and in its policies economically detrimental.

The Cellar - View Single Post - Georgism
For those of you who don't know, Georgists stupidly try to draw an imaginary line of separation between property that is created by the labor of people and that which isn't.
The simple and undeniable truth is that classic liberalism (libertarianism) holds property ownership (regardless of how the property was created) as the most sacred of all rights because property ownership is where our rights stem from.
Georgism is nothing more than socialism which means it's the exact opposite of libertarianism and therefore the exact opposite of freedom itself.

Land (economics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because land is not produced, the market for land responds differently to taxation from the market for labor and produced goods.
An ideally implemented land value tax would not affect the opportunity cost of using land, but would instead decrease the value of legal land ownership (see Georgism).
Land, particularly geographic locations and mineral desposits, has historically been the cause of much conflict and dispute; land reform programmes, which are designed to redistribute geographic land, are often the cause of much controversy and mineral deposits have contributed to many civil wars, particularly in Africa.

LIBERTARIANISM AND GEORGISM -- THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND PRACTICAL RELATIONSHIP
A certain percent of those Libertarians are going to be persuadable or fairly easily persuadable that Georgism is a part of libertarian philosophy, that heretofore they have not really been true libertarians if they have been ignoring this important aspect of freedom.
Georgism is part of the overall libertarian philosophy, and by having us Georgist libertarians reach out to our fellow libertarians, maybe we can have them carry the Georgist movement further than it has been carried.
To conclude, I think that Georgism and libertarianism are intimately related, in that Georgism derives from libertarian philosophy.

The case for Georgism - Forums powered by Reason and Principle
His followers created a "single tax" movement to abolish all taxes other than on land value, and so that policy is usually called "Georgism," although recently his followers have come to prefer the more generic term "geoism," the prefix "geo" representing both George and land.
Indeed, Georgism is more than a mere fiscal reform; in its full application, geoism would sweep away the welfare state and the criminalization of victimless acts.
Georgism is not only consistent with libertarianism, but even further, a world of contractual voluntary communities would necessarily be Georgist because geoism is the most efficient and effective method of financing community services.

And while not a part of what seems to be "pure" Georgism, many Georgists have a "reduce government intervention" stand which seems decidely right wing.

A Critique of 'A Critique of Georgism'
This is a response to an essay entitled, "A Critique of Georgism" © Paul Birch, 29th Aug. 2002.
It is easy to show clear examples where the land owner and the land user are two separate and distinct entities - in the case of a strip mall, the land may be owned by one individual or corporation while the strip mall may have been built and operated by a second.
However, it adds little to his critique of Georgism and while it may have applicability under a narrow set of circumstances, it's hardly something that would be practical for widespread use.

It may be that such heterodox individuals as are attracted to Georgism are more individualist than other individuals (those, say, in more orthodox groups), and that their individualism inhibits cooperation.
It may also be the case that, with a few possible exceptions, no one with the intellectual abilities of Henry George succeeded to the leadership of the movement.
Georgism may not be well, but there still is life in George's venerable argument.

I think Georgism, as a lesser remediation, suggests that by its nature real property is the only wealth that may legitimately be taxed, and should be taxed.
I’m no Georgist either, but I do know that the moral basis of Georgism is definitely not that ‘that if you trace the ownership of any piece of land back far enough you’ll find a crime’ in the sense of dispossession of a previous owner.
I thought the rationale for Georgism is that a land tax is the best tax from an economic standpoint.

I have been thinking a lot about Georgism lately while reading about some of the 19th century radical libertarians who rejected land ownership but embraced other forms of property.
I’m open to good arguments for that position; after all, I did become an IP skeptic, and so maybe land is somehow different from other forms of property in the same way ideas are.

Pure Georgism would scrap income and sales tax and run a country on so-called "socialized rent," but no country has ever tried pure Georgism.
There you might learn why privately appropriated land rent depresses wages; why labor and capital are not natural enemies; how the Depression could have been avoided; and the interesting tidbit that Willie Brown was once a member of the school's board of directors.
Several California politicians flirted with Georgism in the early '70s, and Brown even tried, twice, to push a land-value tax bill through the state's Lower House.

Under a Georgist regime, they'd say, you'd need no eminent domain; just buy from everyone except your holdout, build 90% of the highway, then argue that the value to be added by that last 10% is so great that the site-value of the holdout's land is extremely high.

 Geolibertarian - Libertarian Wiki
Geolibertarians generally advocate distributing the land rent to the community via a Land Value Tax, as proposed by Henry George, and others before him.
Geolibertarians are generally influenced by Georgism, but the ideas behind it predate George, and can be found in the writings of John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, Thomas Paine, David Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill.
They are sometimes classified as left libertarians, along with libertarian socialists, but could more accurately be called centrist libertarians, since they hold right libertarian views on private property in the products of one's labor, and left libertarian views on landed property.
