George Acropolita (Akropolites) (1217–1282), Byzantine historian and statesman, was born at Constantinople.
Acropolita's most important political task was that of effecting a reconciliation between the Greek and Latin Churches, to which he had been formerly opposed.
Acropolita is considered a trustworthy authority as far as the statement of facts is concerned, and he is easy to understand, although he exhibits special carelessness in the construction of his sentences.

At an early age he was sent by his father to the court of III Ducas Vatatzes">John Ducas Batatzes (Vatatzes), emperor of Nicaea, by whom and by his successors (II Lascaris">Theodore II Lascaris and VIII Palaeologus">Michael VIII Palaeologus) he was entrusted with important state missions.

On 24 June, 1274, there arrived at Lyons as representatives of Palaeologus, Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, Theophanes, Bishop of Nicea, Georgius Acropolita, senator and great logothete, Nicholas Panaretus, president of the ward-robe, Berrhoeota, chief interpreter, and Georgius Zinuchi.
Peter and Paul, Gregory X celebrated Mass in the church of St. John, the Epistle, Gospel and Creed were read or sung in Latin and Greek, the article "qui a patre filioque procedit" was sung three times by the Greeks.
On 6 July, after a sermon by Peter of Tarentaise and the public reading of the letter of Palaeologus, Georgius Acropolita and the other ambassadors promised fidelity to the Latin Church, abjured twenty-six propositions which it denied, and promised the protection of the emperor to the Christians of the Holy Land.

On their expulsion by Michael Palaeologus ~fl 1261 Pachymeres settled in Constantinople, studied law, entered the church, and subsequently became chief advocate of the church (xpoir~KandKoc) and chief justice of the imperial court (andKato4thXa~).
His literary activity was considerable, his most important work being a Byzantine history in 13 books, in continuation of that of Georgius Acropolita from 1261 (or rather 1255) to 1308, containing the history of the reigns of Michael and Andronicus Palaeologi.
The History has been edited by I. Bekker (1835) in the Corpus scriptorum hisi.
