 Gepard Serving the Navy
Gepard is the last boat out of a total of 14 built under Project 971 (codenamed ‘Shchuka-B’ or ‘Bars’ after the name of the lead ship built in Severodvinsk).
Gepard got her name from an older World War I submarine, which had completed as many as 15 combat cruises in the Baltic Sea, and got the guards colors from the Project 675 nuclear-powered submarine K-22 Krasnogvardeyets, which, in turn, received it from the K-22 diesel submarine of the XIV-series.
Construction of the Gepard boat was put off more than once because of severance of the long-time cooperation ties among the subcontractors and a shortage of the budget funds as a result of the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
