The Pat Lowther Memorial Award is given for a book of poetry by a Canadian woman published in the preceding year, and is in memory of the late Pat Lowther, whose career was cut short by her untimely death in 1975.

Birdsell is the recipient of Canada Council B Grants and Manitoba Arts Council Major Arts Awards, the Robert Kroetsch Scholarship which enabled her to study creative writing with the author Jack Hodgins at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts.
She was awarded the League of Canadian Poets Gerald Lampert Award for her book, "Night Travellers," and a National Magazine Award for her story, "Falling In Love." In 1986 Birdsell was chosen by the Canadian Book Information Centre as one of 10 authors below the age of 45 whose work is the most promising.
In 1992 Birdsell received the Joseph B Staufer Award from the Canada Council for "meritorious Achievement in the Arts." In 1992 her second novel, "The Chrome Suite," was nominated for The Governor Generals Award and received the McNally Robinson award for best book published in 1992.

Canada’s first poet laureate, George Bowering (left), and colleague Roy Miki, who recently won the 2002 Governor General’s literary award for poetry, will join in a celebration of their craft at SFU on Feb. 13.
The celebrations mark something of a homecoming for Bowering, an SFU professor emeritus who was recently named an officer of the Order of Canada.
He has twice won a Governor-General’s literary award, once for poetry and once for fiction.
