 CRI Journal - CRJ0064A
In his writings Gardner drew upon his occultic experiences, travels, the writings of Murray, the help of Aleister Crowley, and his knowledge of Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, Western ritual/sex magic, magical texts (e.g., the Greater Key of Solomon), and various native Asian and near Eastern religions and their occultic paraphernalia.
Gerald Gardner (1884-1964) almost single-handedly revived (invented) and popularized witchcraft for the modern world.
In Witchcraft Today Gardner further unveiled his Goddess religion as he described the survival of this "old pre-Christian religion" (Murray's theory) and his initiation into it.

 Amazon.com: Books: Witchcraft Today
Like his predecessor, Margaret Murray, Gardner tries to show that "the old religion" is indeed old, possibly even an echo of pre-Christian druidic beliefs.
It then takes the theory one step farther as Gardner makes claim to having found and joined a coven of witches whom he believed to be the last remnants of this old religion.
They argue that if Gardner did fabricate the whole thing himself he would have publicized the material as much as possible and his hesitation shows that the material wasn't his to freely disperse.

Guide Book - Witchcraft Museum Castletown
Some additional information on Gerald Gardiner (1884-1964) is available in Maxwell-Stuart's book in which he states that Gardiner invented (or 're-discovered') what is now known as Wicca, based on the discredited theories of Margaret Murray (1862-1963, who as a nonagenarian provided a strange introduction to Gardiner's Witchcraft Today).
Gardiner, keen on naturism, had established a covern in the early 1950's, including nude dancing and copulation as part of the ritual - this may go somewhat is explaining the rather discreditable reputation he left behind in Castletown.
In his book Witchcraft Today Gardiner makes a number of claims re Manx Witches - if the rest of the book is as inaccurate as these Manx references, it must be treated as a demonstration of incompetent research.
