For Gerald A. Regan, accused serial sexual predator, this case was ultimately all about vindicating Gerald A. Regan, former provincial premier, former federal cabinet minister and wannabe elder statesman of Canadian politics, and then rehabilitating him in the eyes of the courts, the right-thinking public and of history.
Another woman, who claimed Regan had grabbed her and stuck his tongue down her throat when she came to his office to ask for his help in finding a job, also saw the news item and called to say that if the police were finally willing to investigate, she was still prepared to testify.
He claimed, for example, that the woman who'd accused Regan of raping her at a time when she was still "of previously chaste character" was "an unmitigated liar" and said he had "numerous affidavits, all credible" that proved she had had an illegitimate child even before her alleged encounter with Regan.

Facts A. Overview 3 On March 15, 1995, Gerald Regan, by that time a former Premier of Nova Scotia, was charged with a long list of sexual offences, against a variety of women who had worked for or with him, dating back to the 1950s.
The RCMP report about the Regan investigation is very telling in this regard: In some cases, those strongly suspected of being a victim, would not discuss the incident with the investigators, leaving the member with the feeling that the incident had taken place however they preferred not to disclose.
This impact on Regan was a certainty no matter when his name was finally released in connection with these charges, and there is no question that there was sufficient evidence and subjective belief for the police to ultimately lay at least some of the charges.

In both the Regan and Laybolt cases, defence lawyers made arguments that due to the extensive delay, their clients could not receive a fair trial.
It was argued that by virtue of the loss or destruction of evidence, the unavailability of witnesses, the fading recollections of the witnesses that were available, that a fair trial could not be obtained.

Gerald Regan, the former Nova Scotia premier on trial for sexual assault, is tempting contempt of court for his public comments on the credibility of his accusers, media law experts say.
But it's unlikely Regan or the reporters covering his trial will be cited for contempt because judges have become reluctant to enforce existing contempt law, according to a Toronto media lawyer and a Carleton University media law professor.
He says the Regan trial scrums are part of a trend that started with the case of serial killer and habitual rapist Paul Bernardo in the mid-1990s.
