Gerald Schroeder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gerald Schroeder is a former professor of nuclear physics at MIT and former member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Schroeder is an Orthodox Jew, and his most famous works attempt to reconcile the Biblical account of the age of the universe and of Godly Creation with the claims of modern science that the world is billions of years old and that the process of evolution led to the existence of life.
However, Schroeder may be using the Layman's meaning of the word proportionality, and not the mathematical definition (as indicated by an absence of mathematical calculations).

 The Hidden Face of God
Gerald Schroeder holds a PhD degree from MIT with expertise in both physics and biology.
Schroeder likens the intelligent behavior of living things to their having ‘wisdom’; he says, “The wisdom intrinsic to the simplest forms of life is nowhere presaged in the substrate from which life is built” (p.
Schroeder’s chief mission in all the books he has written with this theme has been to convince both the scientist and the Bible believer that there is common ground on which the two can and must perforce meet.

NOT A VERY BIG BANG ABOUT GENESIS
Schroeder set out on an ambitious road aimed at demonstrating to both believers and skeptics that the contradictions between the biblical revelations and the claims of science simply stem from incorrect interpretations and that every word of the Bible is really in complete agreement with the results of scientific exploration.
Schroeder actually considers the universe as a whole, and suggests that along with the increase in the amount of mass, and, hence, in the level of gravitation all over the universe, the time flow is slowing down.
Schroeder’s discourse is limited to a few primitive examples which lack any statistical significance and testify to Schroeder’s amateurish level of familiarity with the subject he endeavored to discuss.

Fitting the Bible to the Data
Schroeder's attempt to connect 31 lines of Genesis to big-bang cosmology and earth paleontology makes entertaining reading, but will convince no one who is not already convinced or totally lacking of critical facilities.
Schroeder's use of an exponential function to give different earth periods for each cosmic day is not justified by his argument that earth time is simply redshifted cosmic time.
Schroeder trots out all the old, tiresome arguments about why "life could not have stared by chance" and how the simplest forms, even viruses, are "far too complex to have originated without there being an inherent chemical property of molecular self-organization and/or reaction enhancing catalysts at every step of their development" (85).

Schroeder writes in two moods, sometimes discerning the transcendent unity of the divine wisdom with unequivocal clarity, sometimes tracing the pattern only faintly and accentuating the continuing hiddenness of God.
Schroeder takes the widespread perception that science disproves religion and turns it on its head: from cosmology to neurology, the latest research makes sense only if viewed from a metaphysical perspective.
Rather, it is an ineffable shiver of the divine, a deep-down stirring of wonder, that he discovers in the furthest reaches of quantum physics, glossed with the poetry of the Hebrew prophets and the mysteries of the kabbalah.

 CONFRONTED WITH CRITIQUE
Schroeder seems to be unaware that the concepts of red shifting and expanding space-time, which he refers to in his reply to Daniel, are in fact notions stemming from the general theory of relativity (i.e.
This shows one more time that Schroeder is confused about the matters he so brazenly endeavored to “explain.” (By the way, the universe’s expansion and red shifting are briefly discussed at http://www.talkreason.org/articles/Cooling.cfm).
Until Schroeder provides some reasonable answers to my critique, my assertions regarding his errors, amazing for a PhD in physics, remain in force and Schroeder’s output, for all its popularity among gullible readers, has to be construed as pseudo-scientific piffle.

The Bible as a Science Text
Schroeder is nobody's fool, and he surely understands evolution, so I find it hard to believe that he is wholly ingenuous describing evolution as simplistically he does.
Indeed, Schroeder is performing a service in that he may be helping to drag other Biblical literalists into the twentieth century; it would be churlish of me to complain that it is only the first half of the century.
Schroeder's answer to the question, "How can we have free will if God knows the future?" is clever but unsupported in any way: God lives in Eternity; Eternity is timeless, so everything happens at once from that vantage point; and the photon, for which time does not exist, is the link between time and Eternity.

Schroeder is a physicist from MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S.) who has resided in Israel for the past twenty years.
Schroeder continues by saying that because we are in the “sixth day” of creation, the Sabbath Day, the seventh day of rest, has not yet occurred.
Schroeder also states that the basic Hebrew root word for “evening” is “chaos” and the basic Hebrew root word for “morning” is “order.” He cites no Hebrew scholar supporting his view, which appears to many scholars to be without foundation.

While it is clear that Schroeder knows some areas of science well, and while it is also plain that he has an extensive knowledge of some areas of biblical interpretation, it seems to me that some of his claims about science and biblical interpretation can be contested.
Schroeder claims that Genesis 1:1 refers to the era prior to quark confinement, i.e., the first hundred-thousandth second of the universe; and he claims that this era precedes the first day of Genesis.
Schroeder claims that the kinds of arguments which he gives provide compelling reasons for thinking that the evolution of life was preprogrammed by an intelligent designer.

Schroeder recalls for us the great sensation created in 1953 by the experiments of Miller and Urey, which appeared to show that the origin of life from inorganic chemical was a simple and almost solved problem.

Gerald Schroeder, a senior research scientist and project leader at the Fish and Aquaculture Research Station in Hof HaCarmel, Israel, discusses the global importance of using integrated fish farming.
The research focuses on (1) the minimum amount of fertilizer required to attain a given fish yield, (2) whether grass should be fermented before being added to the pond, and (3) whether manure must be added daily rather than weekly.
Schroeder concludes that all researchers at NACA have a single goal: "to develop a technology that will insure more and better food for the portion of our planet within 25 degrees of the equator where so many children now go hungry." Integrated fish farming could be the technology which will make this happen.

I fear this topic will be more of a question than a substantive contribution, but I'm hoping it will elicit a substantive contribution.
Gerald Schroeder, an Israeli physicist and orthodox Jew, has written a couple of books, Genesis and the Big Bang,, and The Science of God, in which he argues for the compatibility of a literal interpretation of the 6 days of creation in Genesis and an old universe and earth.
Since I'm no physicist, I thought I would ask if any physicists or astonomers are familiar with Schroeder's argument, and whether they think it might have some validity.
