Cardinal Agnelo, 71, spent nearly eight years as secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments before his 1999 assignment as head of Brazil's oldest diocese, Sao Salvador da Bahia.
Cardinal Agnelo served as one of two vice presidents of the Latin American bishops' council from 1999-2003 and in 2003 was elected president of the Brazilian bishops' conference, the largest in Latin America, with more than 400 bishops.
Geraldo Majella Agnelo was born in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, Oct. 19, 1933.

Dec. 05, 2005 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, the president of the Brazilian bishops' conference, has expressed regrets about a controversy that prompted Vatican officials to drop a Brazilian pop singer from the Vatican's Christmas concert.
Singer Daniela Mercury, who was originally on the schedule for the annual concert, told reporters that she would try to use her televised appearance in Rome to promote the distribution of condoms as a means of preventing the spread of AIDS-- a cause for which she has worked actively in Brazil.
Although conceding that she hoped for a change in Vatican policy regarding condoms, the entertainer said that she would not have used her singing performance as a way of expressing her ideas on that topic.
