La Création de Gérard Bessette   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Bessette's strong interest in psychoanalysis and in the 'psychocritique' school of criticism developed by French critic Charles Mauron, and his frequent use of and references to both, fully justify Robidoux's careful scrutiny of Bessette's biography.
Yet even on this topic, La Création de Gérard Bessette is valuable: not only does it provide some useful new biographical information, but it also structures the vast mass of information and self-analysis provided by Bessette into a coherent sequence of subjects, thus making the information far more accessible to study and further reflection.
The constant structuring presence of this 'projet d'écriture' in Bessette's work is Robidoux's fundamental hypothesis (103), and the second part of La Création de Gérard Bessette, 'L'oeuvre de création,' is a thorough, convincing, and often fascinating demonstration of this hypothesis through the careful study of Bessette's creative works.

Romanic Review: Reality, transference and the classroom: Ces Enfants de Ma Vie by Gabrielle Roy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
One noteworthy exception is Gerard Bessette's work, exemplified by an article on Roy's third novel, Alexandre Chenevert.
In an attempt to expose a disturbance in the author's own relationship with her mother, Bessette mars astute readings of the text with a peremptory tone that manifests itself openly in the final paragraph: " `Tes pere et mere honoreras, afin de vivre longuement'.
Bessette's study is a case in point that demonstrates how psychobiographical criticism, at least in its strong form, can detract from the task of explaining the narrative code and produce ineffectual readings of this type.
