GERARD DAVID [GHEERAERT Davit, (?-1523), Netherlands painter, born at Oudewater in Holland between 1450 and 1460, was the last great master of the Bruges school.
David's "Pieta" in the National Gallery, and the "Descent from the Cross," in the Cavallo collection, Paris (Guildhall, 1906), were painted under this influence and are remarkable for their dramatic movement.
Eberhard Freiherr von Bodenhausen published in 1905 a very comprehensive monograph on Gerard David and his School (Munich, F. Bruckmann), together with a catalogue raisonne of his works, which, after careful sifting, are reduced to the number of fortythree.

Gerard David (c.1455-1523) has often been dismissed as simply another Flemish artist.
David's techniques responded to the growing needs of an open market as well as the demands of foreign buyers; as Ainsworth shows, he was innovative and entrepreneurial, able to move from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance with style and spirit.
Ainsworth is a senior fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which houses the single greatest collection of David's art, and she uses the collection ably to make her points.

History of Art: Gothic Art- Gerard David
Although born in the northern Netherlands, he moved to Bruges as a young man, and most of his work expresses the impassive, unmannered, microscopically realistic approach peculiar to south Netherlandish art in the time of Jan van Eyck.
David was skilled at synthesizing the art of several important south Netherlandish predecessors, adapting, for instance, the compositions of van Eyck and the technique of Hugo van der Goes.
He was also influenced by Hans Memling, whose example led him to refine and polish his cruder northern Netherlandish style and to adopt the popular theme of the Virgin and Child enthroned.

The figures are shown about half length against a gold back-ground; Christ stands at the right, the Virgin and the two other Marys at the left.
The picture is de-scribed and illustrated in the supplement to the Zeitschrif t für Bildende Kunst, May, 1911, in which Wilhelm Valentiner deals with the pictures by David which have passed into American collections since the publication of Bodenhausen's book on David in 1905.
