Hoffnung published a series of books depicting conductors and orchestral instrumentalists.

Gerard Hoffnung was born into a prosperous Jewish family in Berlin on 22 March 1925, and even as a child gained a reputation as a disruptive influence.
Hoffnung was himself an amateur musician, and made musical life the central subject of his cartoons, whether for periodicals of for such books as The Hoffnung Orchestra (1955).
A bon viveur and raconteur, Hoffnung was a frequent broadcaster and often spoke at the Oxford and Cambridge Unions, but he also had a quiet and concerned aspect which was exemplified by his work as a prison visitor.

J’ai découvert Gerard Hoffnung précisément à Londres lors de ma première rencontre avec John Dreyfus qui m’y avait invité pour assister à un de ces concerts mémorables organisé par les descendants de ce grand journaliste, caricaturiste et surtout grand mélomane, qui allait occuper une place à part dans le cœur des Anglais.
Mais pourquoi Hoffnung, parce qu’aussi bien vous pouvez remarquer depuis quelques jours un léger flottement sur mon blog, et je remercie quelques uns d’entre vous de vous être enquis de ma santé… Tout va bien, juste un peu débordé et surtout une prise de conscience de l’ampleur du travail.
Alors ce petit montage que j’ai fait à partir de dessins de Gerard Hoffnung pour dire combien on est seul aussi face à son public, et angoissé et transis et inquiet de la qualité des billets qu’on publie.
