Guardian Unlimited Football Columnists English wannabes could do worse than head for Rangers
If Celtic never got out of the Champions League group phase, they enjoyed some tumultuous nights and the run to the 2003 Uefa Cup final, with Gérard Houllier's Liverpool knocked out in the quarter-finals, proved that O'Neill did not falter when pitted against the supposed sophisticates.
Even so, the FA and Newcastle care little about any of that and it is the sustained involvement on the European scene that gave O'Neill his new standing.
Despite a sensible pragmatism, he showed that his sides did not need to grunt and thump in order to win.

A war of words broke out between Gerard Houllier and Souness, as Houllier tried to blame Neill.
Neill was sent off again a few weeks later, again against Liverpool when the two teams met at Anfield in the Carling Cup, and was consequently forced to sit on the sidelines for another two-game suspension.
Neill started the 2003/04 season with a bang when he caused a national outrage, following a tackle on Jamie Carragher in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in September, which broke the Liverpool star's leg.

 Press Release - IPO Retreat
Guest speakers at the event included Michael ONeill from First Derivatives, Finbarr Power from CNG Travel and Gerard Brandon from Alltracel who all gave the delegates the benefit of their own flotation experiences, while Denis O’Brien added his advice in an after-dinner speech on the Wednesday night.
Gerard Brandon recommended appointing the best in the market, while Finbarr Power also made the point that appointing a broker with a proven track record in your industry is crucial.
In Gerard Brandon’s opinion, one of the best decisions he made was to hire an in-house lawyer on a contract basis to administer the process.

ABC Sport - Soccer - Players' union boss springs to Socceroo Neill's defence
Neill himself insisted there had been no malicious intent in the tackle that will see Carragher sidelined for at least six months.
Players union chief Gordon Taylor has come to the defence of Blackburn's Australian defender Lucas Neill, whom the press wants banned for the rest of the season for his two-footed tackle which broke Liverpool's Jamie Carragher's leg.
Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has called Neill a coward but Taylor, the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive, said it was unfair to demand the Football Association bans the Socceroo for more than three matches.

 O'Neill-type colony
A large orbiting space colony, of the kind proposed by Princeton's Gerard K. O'Neill, consisting of an immense rotating aluminum cylinder, the inner wall of which would be inhabited.
O'Neill envisaged the construction of a series of colonies culminating in a structure 32 km long and 3.2 km in radius, and capable of permanently supporting hundreds of thousands or even millions of inhabitants.
ONeill suggested that they too could be manufactured of extraterrestrial material and could provide an export valuable enough to make a colony economically self-sustaining.

William H. Keith, Jr. -- O'Neill Space Colony
Gerard O'Neill first popularized the idea of enormous colonies built in space in the 1970s.
Illustrated is O'Neill's "Island Three" concept, an enormous cylinder four miles across and twenty miles long, rotating on its long axis to provide spin gravity on the cylinder's inner surface.
The concept arose from a question he asked his students in a special freshman physics seminar at Princeton in 1969, the same year Man first set foot on the Moon: "Is the surface of a planet really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?"

The design of the Babylon 5 space station itself appears to be based upon the concept of an O'Neill cylinder, a space habitat design proposed by the physicist and space pioneer Gerard K. O'Neill in his 1973 book The High Frontier.
Overall, Babylon 5 strove for even-handedness in its treatment of religions, notably in the multi-faith gatherings in the episodes "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place" and "The Parliament of Dreams", although arguably the appearance of Kosh in the guise of a Christian angel was intentionally subversive.

 Bernal sphere
In a series of studies held at Stanford University in 1975 and 1976 with the purpose of speculating on designs for future space colonies, Dr. Gerard Kitchen O'Neill[?] proposed a modified Bernal sphere with a diameter of only 500 m rotating at 1.9 RPM to produce a full Earth gravity at the sphere's equator.
This version of the Bernal sphere was dubbed the "Island One" design, with Islands Two and Three being the Stanford torus and O'Neill cylinder, respectively.
The form of a sphere was chosen for its optimum ability to contain air pressure and its optimum mass-efficiency at providing radiation shielding.
