Gérard Latortue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gérard Latortue (born June 19, 1934 at Gonaïves) was the Prime Minister of Haïti from March 12, 2004 to June 9, 2006.
In February 2004, the country suffered a coup d'état which saw the removal and exile of Jean-Bertrand Aristide as president; Latortue was appointed head of the new provisional government on March 9 while still living in the United States, and was sworn in on March 12.
His administration was denied recognition by a number of foreign states, including the governments of Jamaica and St Kitts and Nevis, as well as the African Union, Venezuela, and Cuba.

According to the British newspaper the Guardian's March 17, 2004 edition: Latortue's "chief political advisor is a friend and fellow long-term south Florida resident, as is the defence minister elect, and another man who is being touted for the PM's chief of staff.

Gerard Latortue was largely seen as a compromise candidate between Haiti's former and forever foreign patróns, though it helped Latortue's case that America's first choice, Hérard Abraham, was his long-time friend and next-door neighbour in the Sunshine State.
Latortue brought Abraham with him as his interim Interior Minister and chief of security, so he has little reason to fear a coup from within, which is after all the traditional way of changing the Haitian government.
On the other hand, Latortue was more or less non-committal on the supposedly pressing issue of whether or not Haiti should re-establish its armed forces, which the Duvaliers' castrated and Aristide dissolved (except for its kick-ass marching band).
