Malanga has called them "studies in subtle sadism" and concedes that the results "were often brutal".
Curiously, Malanga's interest in archives and the importance of photography as a means of recording history is shown in the work he did subsequently as an archivist with the New York City Parks Department.
Malanga freely admits that his connections with the Factory gave him an easy access to most of his subjects, enabling him to compile a who's who of the New York cultural scene.
