Curtin NewsBytes: Reconciliation needs to connect
Inaugural coach of the Fremantle Dockers, Gerard Neesham, who was Curtin's guest speaker for Reconciliation Day, believes that reconciliation can be as simple as a practical get together like a barbeque after a football match.
Nevertheless, Neesham as director of the Clontarf Football Academy – through competitive football – has found a vehicle that is proving successful at connecting Indigenous youth with their peers in the community.
Neesham said also that a fear of educational institutions – or school phobia – develops because on average they miss a third of their primary school which makes it virtually impossible to catch up.

Their story began early in the year when Gerard Neesham quietly asked Mosman Park Football Club if it would consider backing a team of young players, new boys, some of whom had rarely played in a team.
Gerard was a former AFL player and coach deeply respected by the Mosman Park club, but some people were still hesitant about fielding a completely Aboriginal team.
He said Gerard started the program four years ago but these days had to spend most of his time trying to arrange sponsorship and did not get to do much coaching.

One person not surprised by the burgeoning reputation of James Clement is his former coach at Fremantle, Gerard Neesham.
Neesham coached Clement in his first three AFL seasons from 1996-98 and remembers him as "very much a confidence player - the more confidence you instil in him, the better he plays".
Clement played 84 games in five years at Fremantle and must have caught the eye of current Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse, who at the time was in charge at cross-town rival West Coast.

The Midwest Football Academy uses the attraction of a potential career in AFL football to attract and re-engage "at risk" students who might otherwise fail to gain an education.
The concept was introduced to Geraldton by Clontarf Football Academy Director Gerard Neesham and initially concentrated on enticing young people back into the classroom in a traditional secondary school environment.
However it soon became evident to the teaching staff that despite the attraction of football, many of the students were struggling to re-engage in the mainstream classes.

In October 1997, Gerard Neesham was approaching what turned out to be his fourth and final year as coach of Fremantle, having won 10 games and missed the finals by a whisker that year.
Jeff White's homesick return to Melbourne had handed Neesham a precious early draft choice, No.2 overall, in what was hailed - and has subsequently proven - to be a draft pool deeper than Bass Strait.
Now, Neesham might not have traded the pick in a vain attempt to save his skin - he might have considered Fletcher and Bond to be a two-for-one bargain that would deliver a premiership - but the point is that Fremantle should never have allowed such a deal to happen.
