  GerbMerge -- A Gerber-file merging program
Such files were commonly encountered when bitmaps/logos were added to Gerber files.
All files must have the same offset and must be shown looking from the top of the board, i.e., not mirrored.
Gerber files now only write out aperture and macro definitions actually used in that file, leading to slightly smaller Gerber output files.

 Gerber files
Gerber data is a simple, generic means of transferring printed circuit board information to a wide variety of devices that convert the electronic PCB data to artwork produced by a photoplotter.
Gerber Format, which is the format in which Gerber data is expressed, actually is a family of data formats that are subsets of EIA Standard RS-274D.
An RS-274X plot file is a file consisting of RS-274X parameters and standard RS-274D codes which, when correctly interpreted, result in an image that may be displayed or plotted.

Gerber files - These files are used to create the photoplots that will be used to make the copper layers, silk-screens and masks for the PCB.
An issue that arises with these files is whether the hole size refers to the actual drill bit size (in which case the final diameter of the hole will be a few mils smaller after plating) or the finish size (or plated size) which is the final hole size after plating.
In this case, you may have to edit the drill file and increase the drill sizes appropriately.

The layer isn't exactly skipped and it is definitely enabled, the output file is sort of a combination of the top and bottom layers, but looks like the design file not a gerber file.

By default the created Gerber file has.GBR extension with the first six letters of the file name being the first six letters of the database name and the last two being 90 for component side and 91 for solder side.
Now in the Gerber- Output window which pops up will list the positive as well as the negative plot of the selected artwork (note that "mixed mode polarity" option is not checked in the gerber setup window).

 Gerber File Information
A Gerber File is a standard file format used by printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication houses that contains information necessary for computer controlled machines to draw signal traces, drill holes, mill, and cut the PCB.
Since a PCB may have many layers, the older Gerber format EIA RS274D always assumed a set of command files (one for each PCB layer) and one "tool" description file.
The command files (consisting of short commands and X, Y coordinates) were called "Gerber files" and the tool files were called "aperture files".

 Generating gerber files
To ensure that the finished PCB meets your design and manufacturing requirements it is important that you contact the fabrication house and discuss their requirements before generating the Gerber files.
When you generate the Gerber output a series of files are created, each one corresponding to one of the layers enabled in the Gerber setup.
These files are then loaded into a Gerber photoplotter, which produces the necessary phototools for PCB manufacture.
