“Clinical Somatic Education” by Thomas Hanna   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Matthias Alexander, father of the Alexander Technique, was the first person to take somatic education out of the realm of shamanistic mystery and establish it a verifiable, pragmatic technique.
Alexander, during the years from 1904 to 1955, elaborated this internal self-teaching technique by means of discoveries he had made within himself in the course of a sustained effort to change his own posture.
Alexander attempted, at first, to change this habitual cervical curvature by main force, that is, by trying to force the neck to be straight; but, of course, the habituated muscles sprang back into their usual place.

Using the F.M. Alexander Technique in the fields mentioned by the author of the "Thoughts" can take place only after the F.M. Alexander Technique has been accepted and practiced fully, as a whole, and not in pieces, and not in theory alone by practitioners in these fields, as the basis of their activities.
F.M. Alexander hit on the idea of projecting directions as a means of preventing himself from falling back into his faulty speech habits.
It is unfortunate that Alexander left behind him some rather confused followers as far as the practical essence and concept of the "directions" were concerned.

Review: Bone, Breath and Gesture - 8.20.15
Alexander’s work is represented by a conversation between Marjory Barlow and Joan Schirle which was taped at the first International Alexander Teachers’ Congress in New York in 1986.
In his brief introduction to Gerda Alexander, the editor describes Eutony as “one of the main modern schools of somatic work” and states that “Eutony is part of the course of study in music, theatre, and physical education departments of nearly every major university in Western Europe”.
From a very early age, Gerda Alexander was educated in the ideas of Jacques Dalcroze who, like his contemporary Rudolf Laban, makes more than one appearance in the pages of this book (see for example the interview with Irmgard Bartenieff).

 Somatic Education - Somatic Practices
Alexander Technique is an educational process that teaches you how to change the habits you want to change, and how to use your body with more freedom and ease.
For example, instead of training dancers and athletes to shape their bodies to fit a normative classical form, they encouraged individual expressiveness and a return to a more natural body, allowing forms of movement to emerge from within rather than imposing them-what Somatics practitioners refer to as "inhabiting" the body.
In the late 1800s, F. Alexander in Melbourne, Australia, and Leo Kofler in New York were coincidentally afflicted by chronic laryngitis for which physicians could find no cause or cure.
