Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs - LoveToKnow 1911
FRIEDRICH GERHARD ROHLFS (1831-1896), German explorer of the Sahara, son of a physician, was born at Vegesack, near Bremen, on the 14th of April 1831.
Rohlfs, untrained in diplomacy, was no match for Sir John Kirk, the British Agent, and he was soon recalled, and did not again visit Africa.
Rohlfs visited many regions not before traversed by Europeans, and the value of his work was recognized in 1868 by the Royal Geographical Society, which bestowed on him the Patron's Medal.

Rohlfs had always been interested in military matters, and had already seen service with several armies and begun medical studies, before, at the age of thirty, he set out on his first journey into the desert.
Gerhard Rohlfs’ life only becomes properly comprehensible against this background, to say nothing of the extraordinary attraction, which the Sahara, this in every respect extreme landscape, held for him throughout his life.
Gerhard Rohlfs, his “subject”, is a contradictory man, on the one hand utterly attached to the values of his continent, his religion and his century.

Gerhard Rohlfs, 14/4/1831 - 2/6/1896, together with Heinrich Barth and Gustav Nachtigal, ranks as one of the most outstanding 19th century German explorers of Africa.
Following several years of travel in northern Africa, in the winter of 1873-74 Rohlfs led the first — and for the next hundred years what would remain the only — interdisciplinary expedition in western Egypt away from the oases — the then completely unknown Libyan Desert.
It was published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gerhad Rohlfs' death and to provide a rich source of geographical, ethnographical, botanical and archaeological observations for both the scientist and the interested desert traveler.
