Schröder Faces Poll Blow in Hamburg
The German chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, suffered a humiliating blow last night when his Social Democratic party was left trailing in local elections in the traditionally left-leaning city of Hamburg.
The CDU's spokesman Christian Wulff said the "sensational" result in Hamburg was a protest against Mr Schröder and his government, which he said had lost the confidence and trust of the German people.
Last night's result for the CDU also strengthens the position of the party's national leader, Angela Merkel, who is expected to fight Mr Schröder in Germany's general election in 2006.

The Observer International Germans love Schröder again
She has a glacial relationship with Edmund Stoiber - leader of the CSU, the CDU's Bavarian sister party - who harbours ambitions to be the opposition's candidate for Chancel lor, despite his defeat by Schröder in 2002.
Merkel is a far less charismatic figure than Schröder, whose humble origins - he is the son of a cleaning lady - were intriguingly documented last week by Stern magazine.
Peter Lösche, a political expert at Göttingen University, traces Schröder's remarkable comeback to his decision last February to resign as SPD leader and concentrate on reforming Germany.

Meanwhile, Schröder confirmed his consent to the EU constitution, saying "It wouldn't make any sense to reconsider the EU convention's draft constitution again." He also said he hoped that the ratification process will soon be concluded.
Though German Chancellor Schröder supports the draft, his government is deeply divided over two immigration-related proposals – the Greek plan to harmonize immigration and asylum within the EU and the transition to majority voting on certain issues.
A day before the summit Schröder reiterated his conviction that Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer would be a suitable candidate for the newly created position of EU foreign minister.

Davids Medienkritik: Schroeder On The Way Out / Schröder auf dem Weg zum Ausgang
German Chancellor Gerhardt Schröder is stepping aside as the leader of the German Social Democrat Party after a series of disastrous electoral losses in local elections.
(Tonight Schröder and comrades should ask themselves: "why didn't we cooperate with the CDU when we were in the opposition to implement needed reforms instead of systematically blocking everything.")
During his election to chancellor, Schröder used anti-American rhetoric...

Gerhard Schröder, Germany's embattled chancellor, on Wednesday suffered a new blow as the country's highest court struck down his landmark immigration law after procedural objections by the opposition.
But now a law liberalizing immigration, put in place by Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, has met with opposition from several local states, demonstrating that local interests, national interests, and the interests of global labor are not always in sync.
The government's room for manoeuvre is limited by the fact that any attempt by Mr Schröder to accommodate the CDU will inevitably prompt objections from the liberal-minded Greens, the junior coalition partner in the federal government.

Germany: state elections in Saxony-Anhalt - Increased vote for the extreme right
The SPD candidate for Federal Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, has demanded that the SPD in Saxony-Anhalt form a "grand coalition" with the CDU, the very party which just lost the election.
Frey invested millions in a large-scale propaganda offensive and was able to turn to his own advantage the pent-up anger and desperation felt by many of the victims of the worsening social crisis.
Lying on the rivers Elbe and Saale, and with two million voters, Saxony-Anhalt was once the second biggest industrial area in Germany, surpassed only by the Ruhr.

 Foreign Dispatches: 09/28/2003 - 10/04/2003
Left-wingers in the party complained bitterly yesterday that Mr Schröder's attempts to reform the economy with a series of cuts to Germany's generous social welfare, pension and employees' rights provisions had led to an "erosion at the base of the party" with thousands of members handing in their party cards.
Schröder's Popularity Dives Amid Harsh Spending Cuts screams the headline of this Independent story, and one might take that to mean that Herr Schröder was making spending cuts the public at large found deeply unpopular; but what do we learn on reading further into the story?
The result, which implied that in the event of a snap general election the conservatives could obtain an absolute majority in parliament, was published against the backdrop of an ongoing dispute within the Social Democrats over the government's reform programme.

 The Agonist thoughtful, global, timely
The Social Democratic Party of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and the opposition Christian Democrats are more deeply rooted in the west, as is suspicion of far-right groups like the National Democratic Party of Germany, which won nearly 10 percent of the vote in the eastern state state of Saxony.
Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's ruling Social Democrats were dealt a heavy blow yesterday by voters in two east German states where anger at high unemployment and economic reforms prompted a surge in support for the far Right and post-communists.
In Saxony, which the Christian Democrats have ruled in a paternalistic style since reunification, the National Democrats quietly built a grass-roots network in the countryside and small towns, many of which were blighted economically by the demise of the coal-mining industry.

WORLD VIEWS: German election reveals two or no winners; Iran asserts nuclear-energy production rights; Pakistani journalist bashes loutish Muslims
Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, seeking a renewed mandate for proposed reforms, claims to have won, even though his Social Democrats (SPD) scored just shy of their main rivals, the more right-leaning Christian Democrats (CDU) led by Angela Merkel, a politician from the former East Germany.
Whether Merkel, a former physicist, has it in her to put up a fight against Schröder for control of whatever governing coalition now emerges -- and, ultimately, for the chancellorship -- remains to be seen.
Schröder's center-left governing coalition fell apart, as the SPD won only 34.2 percent of the vote.

The results for the state parliament elections in the eastern states of Saxony and Brandenburg dealt a further blow to the chancellor, Gerhard Schr&, and his national coalition of Social Democrats and Greens.
The neo-Nazis of the National Democratic party of Germany (NPD), a party the government tried and failed to have banned last year because of its extremist views, took a projected 9% in Saxony and 12 seats in the state parliament in Dresden, one short of Mr Schröder's party.
Mr Schröder's push to shake Germany out of stagnation and stubbornly high unemployment by, initially, cutting unemployment benefits from next year and shortening the time for which they are paid, dominated the election.

 Germany's Not-So-Grand Coalition
That's pretty much what Germany faces in the coming years, following an agreement announced Oct. 10 by Angela Merkel's center-right Christian Democrats (CDU) and Gerhard Schröder's center-left Social Democrats (SPD) to form a so-called Grand Coalition of Germany's two major political groupings.
Some pundits were predicting her political downfall after her party and its allies, the Bavaria-based Christian Socialist Union (CSU), just barely edged Schröder's Social Democrats in the Sept. 18 voting.
But Merkel recovered with amazing speed, silenced critics in her own ranks, and hung tough in negotiations with Schröder to claim the Chancellorship.
