Guardian | Geri Allen, The Life of a Song
Allen is a woman with a glowing reputation for many achievements, not least being the first keyboardist in 35 years to be hired by Ornette Coleman - a measure of her open approach and ability to float free of harmony's more inflexible principles.
Allen's opening LWB House - the Remix (it's a reference to the ever-changing chemistry of her family) starts as a mid-tempo ostinato and develops with dissonant harmonies, mimicking the string sound of the African kora.
Allen plays a lovely version of Lush Life in low, dark chords developing into pealing sounds (Bill Evans phrases occasionally flitting in) over an ebbing and flowing pulse, and her Herbie Hancock associations are exuberantly celebrated in the rolling gospel feel of Celebration Song and the impulsive momentum of Dance of the Infidels.

Geri Allen is the quintessence of what a late-'90s mainstream jazz musician should be.

Allen's loose-limbed lyricism and off-center linearity are perfectly complemented by the innate tunefulness of bassist Haden and the unerring timbral sense of drummer Motian.

Geri Allen is a pianist and musical architect who operates in a pan-stylistic mode.
While Allen clearly knows where she's going, she's susceptible to too many roadside stops, and her eclecticism is sometimes unnecessary, as in Reid's barbarian-at-the-dinner-table electric solo on "Prince," and in her child's vocal on "Angels." But these are small caveats to an otherwise fascinating offering.
This release by geri Allen is very polished, so much so that it reduces some of it's impact and thus reflects the 3 star rating as opposed to four.

I have to say that while I have generally considered myself to be a fan of hers, this record really isn't all that compelling and is actually causing me to reevaluate her as a musician.
Something that I'm realizing about Allen is that she actually doesn't improvise a whole lot-- namely, she plays a lot of runs and patterns over and over.....she might alternate the sequence in which they occur or the harmony a little bit, but it definitely seems she is overreliant on her stock runs and rhythmic patterns.
Allen's playing and Herbie Nichols has a lot to do with the fact that both of them have (for lack of a better term) an elliptical approach to composition and playing.
