  Theodore Gericault: Romantic Painter
Theodore Gericault was born in 1791 to a middle class family in Rouen.
With each of Gericault's five sketches the rescue boat appeared further and further away from the raft while the bodies became more clearly grouped with others that portray the same emotions.
One of the most effective ways Gericault portrays the stormy emotional atmosphere of the painting is through contrasting the lighted horizon near the rescue boat with the dark clouds in the sky.

Two years later (1814) he re-exhibited this work accompanied with the reverse picture Cuirassier blesse (Louvre), and in both subjects called attention to the interest of contemporary aspects of life, treated neglected types of living form, and exhibited that mastery of and delight in the horse which was a feature of his character.
Disconcerted by the tempest of contradictory opinion which arose over these two pictures, Gericault gave way to his enthusiasm for horses and soldiers, and enrolled himself in the mousquetaires.
Easily depressed or elated, Gericault took to heart the hostility which this work excited, and passed nearly two years in London, where the Radeau was exhibited with success, and where he executed many series of admirable lithographs now rare.

REVIEW/ART; Gericault's Views of the Times of Day - New York Times
The Romanticism of Gericault's image is signaled by its imposing scale and its disorienting disproportion of elements.
"Gericault's Heroic Landscapes" is the latest and one of the best examples of the focused, small-scale exhibition that -- in light of escalating costs for large-scale shows -- has become increasingly appealing to museums.
Representations of the four times of day -- morning, noon, evening and night -- were a common decorative cycle for 18th-century artists, and Gericault's landscapes depended on 18th-century sources (one such cycle by Vernet is on view in the fine French landscape show at Colnaghi, 21 East 67th Street).

Mazeppa tells the story of a painter (Gericault) who is brought into the sensuous and strange world of a traveling "circus" -- not like Ringling Bros., but more of a demonstration of horse training and acrobatic feats on horseback.
The story is of Gericault's immersion in the sensual pleasures of the circus -- gorgeous horses, gorgeous music by Ukrainian singers, gorgeous women -- and his transformation by that experience.
The main strength of the movie is in the lush visuals, particularly in the portrayal of the sensuality of the horses' bodies and movement.

The 25-year-old French painter Theodore Gericault was already a gold medal winner at the 1812 Paris Salon and would soon acquire fame for his 1819 "Raft of the Medusa" when he traveled to Italy in 1816 to experience ancient and Renaissance art.
A painter of outstanding originality who was considered one of the founders of the French Romantic School, Theodore Gericault left Paris in late 1816, at the age of twenty-five, and spent the next year in Italy, making an extraordinary series of works in a variety of media.
The book sheds light not only on a hitherto unexamined period of Gericault's life but also on the efforts of a key figure in a transitional period of French art to come to grips with the classical and neoclassical past while embracing the new century's passions for the exotic and the real.
