The Samaritans have existed as group separate from the Jews since the exile of the northern kingdom in 722 B.C. They were a distinct people already by the time of Ezra and Nehemiah.
In the days of Alexander the Great, they built their own temple on Mt. Gerizim (which is currently being excavated underneath the Byzantine Church on the summit of the mountain), and held their own sacrifices there while others were going on in Jerusalem.
Jesus was asked by the woman at the well where sacrifices should be made - she of course went to this sacrifice for Passover every year.
