When one parachute infantry regiment, preceded by reconnaissance troops, gained 25 miles the first day, the corps commander put a special task force composed of two battalions of Rangers in the lead, while the airborne division merely blocked to the north to cover assembly of an armored division that was to be committed later.
While the 82d Airborne Division remained in Naples, one regiment, the 504th Parachute Infantry, was attached on 27 October to the VI Corps.
It was subsequently committed as an attachment to divisions in the Ardennes from 22-30 December and from 20-29 January 1945.

German soldiers of the 29th Mechanized Grenadier Division and all of the 305th Division controlled the area around Fallascoso.
The river flow was so strong that many of the wounded troops on the Fallascoso side of the Sangro could not return to their base camps on the east side of the Sangro and died of exposure.
It is believed the German soldiers were of an Alpine regiment garrisoned at Torricella Peligna and they were taking revenge because three of their men were killed the night before.

The German retreat did not last long, however; on 5th July the Allies encountered resolute resistance in defence of positions just south of a line Ancona-Arezzo-Leghorn, and in particular there was a spell of fairly heavy and inconclusive fighting on both sides of the Chiana valley, leading to Arezzo.
At first the 5th Division advanced along the north of the "toe" and the 1st Canadian Division through the mountainous centre; although opposition was weak, the advance was slowed down by demolitions and difficult country.
On 6th December the 1st Canadian Division (which had relieved the 78th Division), and on 7th December the 8th Indian Division crossed the Moro River and drove towards Ortona; in Ortona itself for over a week (20th-28th December) there was most bitter street fighting between the Canadians and the German 1st Parachute Division.
