It was one of three German army formations assigned to the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, code-named Operation Barbarossa.
The German advance to the Caucasus and the Volga culminated in the carnage of the Battle of Stalingrad.
The Soviets outnumbered the Germans on average by 9:1 in troops, 9 or 10:1 in artillery and 10:1 in tanks and self-propelled artillery.

Actually, the 3rd Battalion, 259th Infantry, with Co "A", 748th Tank Battalion and elements of the 808th Tank Destroyer Battalion attached, was to move through the town from north to south, simultaneously with an advance by the 260th Infantry through the north portion of the Division zone.
The 260th and 261st Infantry were to cross the river abreast, the 260th on the left flank of the Division, the 261st on the right.
The Division occupied the area around Regensburg from its capture on April 28 until May 1 when it was once more ordered to advance to the southeast in a zone the left flank of which was the south bank of the Danube.

The Division was subordinate to the XX Korps/ 11th Army until March 1941, went to the Army reserve in April and joined the II Korps/ 11th Army in May until the start of the Russian campaign.
The Division had 4 infantry regiments until the 235th regiment of the division was disbanded on July 20th 1942.
Early 1944 - the division (XX Korps) absorbed the remains of the 216th Infantry Division (destroyed during Kursk and autumn battles of 1943).

Many of these Japanese troops were the elite of the Japanese Army, and they were swollen with a fanatical fighting spirit that convinced them that they could defeat these American invaders that had come to defile their homeland.

The Division barely escaped total destruction in the battle (in fact, one book of mine lists them as 'Destroyed' at Karkhov!) and was sent to the reserves to be re-enforced and re-equipped.
After the surrender of the Germans at Stalingrad, the unit was given the honorary title of Guards and was made the '271st Guards Rifle Regiment, 88th Guards Rifle Division' for their valor displayed in the bloody fighting.

My father, Alfred D. Sheridan, was drafted at the age of 18 on August 3rd, 1943 and went on to serve in L Company, Third Battalion, 358th Infantry of the 90th Division.
The 90th Division slowly made it's way across France towards the border with Germany crossing the Moselle River in November 1944.
His division then made preparations to be transferred to the Pacific to fight the Japanese, but the war ended in August 1945 and my father eventually returned home to the Bronx in December 1945.

The 100th arrived in Oran, North Africa, on September 2, 1943, and was attached to the 34th Infantry.
The main body of the RCT arrived in Naples, Italy, on June 2, and on June 10 it was joined with the 100th Battalion in attachment to the 34th Infantry.
Attached to the 92nd Division, the RCT broke through the supposedly impregnable "Gothic Line" on April 5, less than one month before the war ended in Italy on May 2.

This unit was originally in the Luftwaffe as the 14th Luftwaffe Field Division.
After being reorganized as the 26th Panzer Division, some of the 23rd Infantry Division's original components were used to create a new 23rd Infantry Division.
In 1944 he transferred to the 116th Panzer Division on the Western Front and was awarded the Knight's Cross for his actions during the Ardennes Offensive.

AJAs in the 298th and 299th were disarmed, shipped to the Mainland and reorganized as the 100th Infantry Battalion.
Upon arrival at Oakland, Calif., the 100th Infantry Battalion was assigned to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, for further training.
They arrived in Oran, Algeria, and were attached to the 34th Division, known as the "Red Bull" Division.
