The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), stationed at Fort Drum, New York, is a specially tailored infantry division that is rapidly deployable by strategic airlift to conduct a full spectrum of operations from humanitarian relief to combat.
Since the 10th Mountain Division was one of the last to enter combat, it was to be used in the projected invasion of Japan.
The Division was officially reactivated on February 13, 1985, at Fort Drum, New York as the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry).

 Massacres and Atrocities of WWII in Western Europe
Late in August, 1944, as the German armies were retreating eastwards in the face of the Allied advance, units of the British 2nd S.A.S. Regiment were parachuted in behind the enemy lines to harass the retreating Germans.
The German 11th Battalion of Jäger-Regiment 98 of the 1st Gebirgs (Mountain) Division, commanded by Major Harald von Hirschfeld, arrived on the island and soon Stukas were bombing the Italian positions.

The Germans were forced to put their main ground force ashore south of Oskarsborg, some 20 miles from Oslo city, and make their approach by land (they arrived in the capital late that night).
The German destroyers were supposed to have already left Narvik, but were delayed because the tanker which was supposed to have refueled them had been intercepted by a Norwegian patrol boat and scuttled to prevent its capture.
German air attacks were the chief factor in forcing the evacuation - Namsos was badly bombed April 20th, destroying the harbor facilities, and by the time of the evacuation was almost completely levelled, except for the ruined walls of the town church.

The 49th Mountain Corps and the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler SS Division were taken away from the 11th Army and assigned to the German offensive towards Rostov.
The Romanian Mountain Corps was assigned to the defense of the Crimean coast between Sudak and Alushta.
The Romanian Mountain Corps was pulled out from the first line and sent south to eliminate the Soviet resistance at Balaklava and the 4th Mountain Division was put in the reserve of the 54th Corps.

The plan called for the two mountain divisions of Gebirgskorps Norwegen to occupy Petsamo in the case of a renewed war between Finland and the Soviet Union.
The German 2nd Mountain Division occupied the area around Liinahamari and the German 3rd Mountain Division occupied Luostari.
The operation was followed up by Operation Platinfuchs which was an attack by the two division against Murmansk as a part of a larger operation called Silberfuchs.

It was called the "Blue Division" because the original uniform included the distinctive dark blue shirts of the Spanish Fascists (the Falange), however, the Division adopted German uniforms as soon as they reached Germany.
Division Blindee ("Leclerc's Division") they took part in the Normandy Campaign, they were the first allied troops to enter in Paris on August 24th (evening) and they fought in France and Germany ending the war in Berchtesgaden.
The Germans were entrenched in the Pointe-de-Grave, a point of land guarding the entrance to the mouth of the Gironde, the river that leads to Bordeaux.

Eduard Dietl's 3rd Mountain Division embarked on 10 destroyers and four submarines to protect the landing force from a counterattack.
German forces ashore would be resupplied and reinforced by tankers and cargo ships but until these vessels arrived, Dietl's troops would have to rely on the meager supplies carried with them aboard the small destroyers and on stocks aboard several steamers disguised as merchantmen that already would have arrived in port.
The German fleet heading for Narvik reached the entrance to Vest-fjord at 9 p.m., and the 10 destroyers entered the fjord without contact.

Although the entry dated 10 August 1944 is the first time the division group is mentioned in Kräutler’s Dienstlaufbahn or service record, several sources indicate he assumed leadership of the unit concurrent with entering reserve status with the 20th Mountain Army on 1 March 1944.
