  German 3rd Light Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1939 it fought in the invasion of Poland.
Due to shortcomings that the campaign revealed in the organization of the Light divisions it was reorganized as the 8th Panzer Division afterward, in October 1939.
As the 8th Panzer Division it fought in the 1940 Battle of France and then remained on occupation and garrison duty in France and Germany until joining Operation Barbarossa in the summer of 1941.

Kümmel remained in the military as the Reichswehr became the new Wehrmacht and in 1938 was transferred to the newly formed 8th Panzer Regiment of the 10th Panzer Division at Boblingen near Stuttgart, southwestern Germany.
During the German offensive in the West of 1940, 10th Panzer Division was part of Guderian 's XIX Panzer Corps, which broke through at Sedan, fought in the Low Countries and France, finally reaching the English Channel.
On February 14th of 1941, leading elements 5th Leichte (Panzer) Division along with their commander Erwin Rommel landed in Tripoli and were joined in early May by 15th Panzer Division.

The Germans were forced to use such trick: 50(!) tanks immitated an attack, so it became possible to set another 88mm flak, which managed to eliminate the tank after two days it held up the advance of the entire 6th Panzer Division.
One of German rounds struck the turret ring and the KV was forced to leave its trench and maneuver by whole hull for aim.
The result: 11 men of German crews were killed, 1 captured by Soviet SMG platoon; two KingTigers were totally destroyed, and last one was repaired and moved to Soviet polygon Kubinka (where it was learned).

The Germans chose several roads to Leningrad during the summer of 1941 but found each with its own kind of Soviet defense and counterattack.
Manstein’s LVI (Panzer) Corps was assigned this road and was told to advance rapidly east and then north to cut Leningrad off from the rest of Russia.
When it was all over, the German 8th Panzer Division was routed, permanently losing about 30 tanks (with many others damaged) and retreated 25 miles.

 9.SS-Panzer-Division "Hohenstaufen"
The division was moved to Germany for refit first in the Siegen area but as this was unsuitable for armoured warfare training the division was sent to the Paderborn-Muenster area.
On 12.12.44, the division was moved to the Muenstereifel where it was to be reserve for "Unternehmen Herbstnebel" (Wacht am Rhein was the first name for the offensive, but it was changed at the end of November 1944).
After increasing threats to along the Eastern Front, the German OKW shifted the a number of units east for an offensive aimed at stopping the Soviet drive through Hungary, and at relieving the encircled units in the Hungarian Capital of Budapest, mainly the 8.SS and 21.SS Kavallerie-Divisionen.

 Last Stands
The German drive continued, forming a massive bulge in the Allied line, until the attack was blunted by the 2nd Armored Division.
They issued an ultimatum, signed by "The German Commander," that described the success of the German spearheads in the west and demanded the Americans to honorably surrender the encircled town within two hours or be annihilated by German artillery.
The message was quickly forwarded to division where General McAuliffe was just leaving the headquarters to congratulate the defenders of a roadblock who had beaten back a German attack.
