The Tornado F.3 is the RAF's air defence fighter aircraft, based at RAF Leuchars and RAF Leeming to defend the UK’s airspace.
Aircraft in development or soon to be deployed include the Airbus A400M, of which 25 are to be used to replace the remaining Hercules C-130Ks.
The design was approved by King George V in 1921, after much opposition from the Admiralty, who have the right to approve or veto any flag flown ashore or on board ship.

RLM aircraft designation system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RLM aircraft designation system was an attempt by the aviation bureaucracy of the Third Reich to standardize and produce an identifier for each aircraft type produced in Germany.
When the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium "Reich Aviation Ministry") was given control of the country's aviation activities in 1933 it set out to catalogue both aircraft already in production by various manufacturers as well as new projects approved for development by the ministry.
For most manufacturers however, the designation remained the same: In smaller companies (like Klemm and Fieseler) the namesake owner and nominal chief designer were one and the same person while in bigger companies the planes were designed by a factory team with varying members.

With some 942 aircraft and a manpower of 49,280 (in 2004), the RAF is one of the largest air forces in the world.
The decision to merge the two units and create an independent air force was a response to the events of World War I, the first war in which air power proved to be decisive.
However RAF aircraft were deployed on Ascension Island and on board the Navy's aircraft carriers.

In 1951 to 1953 Korolev's design bureau had prepared an experimental trisonic ramjet design, the EKR.The expert commission ifelt that there were still many technical problems to be solved, most of which were better handled by an aircraft designer rather than Korolev.
The SVD Air Sensor System worked abnormally, so the decision was made to disconnect the SVD sensors and fly the mission using only the astronavigation system and hold inertial velocity to Mach 3.15-3.2.

Air Force Technology - MiG-29 Fulcrum - High Performance Combat Aircraft
The mission of the MiG-29 is to destroy hostile air targets within radar coverage limits and also to destroy ground targets using unguided weapons in visual flight conditions.
The aircraft is equipped with an information and fire control radar system comprising: an N-019 radar developed by Phazotron Research and Production Company, Moscow; an infrared search and track sensor; a laser rangefinder; and a helmet-mounted target designator.
While moving on the ground, the air intakes are closed and air is fed through the louvres on the upper surface of the wing root to prevent ingestion of foreign objects from the runway.

 German Military Aircraft Designations (1933-1945)
In official RLM paperwork, aircraft model numbers were always prefixed by the number 8 and a dash (similarly, piston engines used designations with a "9-" prefix, while jet engines were prefixed with "109-").
Captured aircraft, which are not included in the RLM lists in one of my sources are outside the scope of this designation listing.
Designations are written without a dash between the manufacturer's code and the RLM number, because that's the most common practice.

The preliminary designs for "Project 1065", as it was designated, went through a iteration or two and finally resulted in a proposal submitted to the RLM in May 1940.
In modern aircraft, this is done by a high-torque electric motor or airflow from a small starter turbine engine, while in many earlier jet aircraft it was done using a pyrotechnic cartridge that kicked the turbine into motion.
Preliminary design of the He-280 apparently began in the summer of 1939, while the He-178 was going into flight tests, but in any case work started in earnest on the Heinkel fighter in the fall of the 1939.

With a Soviet designation but a Junkers model number, the two-jet-engine Samolyot ("Aircraft") 150 was a successful design, but it was abandoned in 1952 as the requirements of the Soviet air force shifted to longer-range bombers.

Once a request for close air support had been passed to a jet by an Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, it took the Air Force 26 minutes to calculate the desired mean point of impact, which is required to ensure the bomb hits the target, Hagenbeck said.
The German Air Ministry field manual, 'The Conduct of Air Operations', which lay down doctrine, stated the overriding mission was to 'secure and maintain air superiority' and only then to provide 'combat and other air action supporting army forces on the ground'.

 Flags of National Defence
Although the Air Board soon lost its identity as it became absorbed into the newly established Department of National Defence (1922), the CAF went on to gain the designation Royal and on April 1, 1924 became the Royal Canadian Air Force, a name which was lost upon unification in 1968.
These distinguishing flags continued to be used by the RCAF up until the adoption of their new ensign in 1940 at which time a change was proposed that would have merely placed a golden maple leaf in the centre of each flag, possibly in imitation of a practice used in the Canadian Army.
Accepted with enthusiasm, the Air Command Flag is flown at air bases along with the National Flag and the CF Ensign, and a desktop version is often to be seen in the offices of the Air Command personnel.

37MM AND 40MM GUNS IN BRITISH SERVICE
This was designed by a Czechoslovak called Janecek (Littlejohn in English) and consisted of an attachment screwed onto the muzzle which squeezed specially designed 0.45 kg tungsten-cored skirted shot down to about 33mm calibre, increasing the muzzle velocity to 1,280 m/s and the armour penetration to 88mm at 450m.
This was designed to fire APDS rounds which would match the penetration of the 'Littlejohn' shot while still allowing HE shells to be fired.
The system proved highly accurate, much more so than the rockets which replaced it, but was withdrawn from N. Africa because the aircraft were too vulnerable to ground fire (39 were lost to flak) and the gun was incapable of dealing with the Tiger tank.
