Plantation Island and the German Flatts Canal of 1798
The German Flatts Canal, completed in 1798, was not one of the earliest works of the Western Inland Lock Navigation Company (1792-1820), but in many ways it was one of the most significant.
Being originally built of stone in 1798, the German Flatts locks became the oldest unmodified locks in New York State.
Thus the "German Flatts Canal" was born, at least conceptually.

Fort Stanwix National Monument - The Palatine Germans (U.S. National Park Service)
The Germans that would eventually settle the Mohawk Valley came from the Rhine Valley River region known as the "Palatinate." The name arose from the Roman word "Palatine," the title given to the ruling family of the area when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire.
It was also decided that the Palatine could be useful in settling the frontiers of the Colony of New York and in producing naval stores (lumber, hemp, tar, ect.).
In 1721, a new royal governor had arrived in New York, and was immediately contacted by Palatine leaders seeking to settle lands in the Mohawk Valley area.
