German Geophysical Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The German Geophysical Society (German: Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft, DGG) is a society for geophysics in Germany; it was founded in 1922 in Leipzig, Germany on the initiative of the great seismologist Emil Wiechert, as Deutsche Seismologische Gesellschaft (German Seismological Society) but changed its name into the current one in 1924.
Its main activities include the organization of an annual scientific conference of geophysicists mostly of German-speaking countries (or close personal or professional ties to them) and the publication of a major scientific journal, the Geophysical Journal International (GJI) in cooperation with the Royal Astronomical Society.
Members are mostly professional geophysicists, but in principle, everybody who supports the aims of the society can become a member.

German Geophysical Society Preserves History of the Geosciences
The German Geophysical Society includes a very active History Commission, founded in 1982, and the Society has been publishing the journal Mitteilungen des Arbeitskreises (Communications of the Commission) since then.
The lives of leading German seismologists and geophysicists are also being documented, along with histories of institutes, scientific programs and international collaborations.

 EGS - Julius Bartels
From 1936, he variously held posts as Professor of Geophysics at Berlin University and Director of the Potsdam Geophysical Institute (formerly Magnetic Observatory), Professor of Geophysics and Director of the Geophysical Institute at Göttingen University, and Director of the Institute for Stratospheric Research of the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy, Katlenburg-Lindau.
He was awarded the Charles Chree Medal and Prize of the Physical Society (London) in 1953, the Emil Wiechert Medal of the German Geophysical Society in 1955, and the Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union (posthumously) in 1964.
As head of the German National Committee for the International Geophysical Year he took a leading part in planning the German IGY programme and, together with Chapman, was much involved in the organization of the IGY internationally.

 Some Aspects in Emil Wiechert
F Neumann had already lectured on "Theory of the Earth", therefore geophysical topics were not unknown both to him and to his students.
Here in Goettingen he was engaged to establish the Geophysical Institute, to reform the curriculum of geophysics, as well as to organise a world-wide net of research stations (Pacific Ocean, China, Argentine).
In Germany, he was strongly engaged in the foundation of the Society of Seismology, being a precursor of the present "German Geophysical Society".

 Thomas Hertweck - GAP
In 1985, students at the University of Karlsruhe had a great idea: they thought that it would be very interesting to organize a meeting for all fellow students of geophysics in Germany.
Later on, the motto "Geophysical Activity Program" (in German: Geophysikalisches AktionsProgramm) was introduced to give the three letters GAP a meaning.
In the course of the years, the GAP has been established as an annual meeting of students of geophysics and geosciences from all over Europe.
