Rail transport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Securing railways is often more difficult than for other modes of transport because stations are designed with easy access and high capacity rather than security as their primary goals; most trains make many stops, rendering any sort of passenger screening difficult; and securing the tracks as they run through cities and the countryside is impractical.
The first railways in Great Britain (also known as wagonways) were built in the early 17th century, mainly for transporting coal from the mine to the water side where it could be loaded on to a boat.
Railways soon spread throughout the United Kingdom and through the world, and became the dominant means of land transport for nearly a century, until the invention of aircraft and automobiles, which prompted a gradual decline in railways.

Numbering scheme of the German railways - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The different railway companies in Germany have used various schemes to classify their rolling stock.
Bavaria's state-owned railway chose a different way: They also used P, S, or G to indicate the train type, but combined with the numbers of driving axles and of the axles in total, separated by a slash (similar to the Swiss system).
After German reunification the DB number scheme was also introduced to DR locomotives (effective January 1, 1992), thus creating some numbers that were used again (e. g.

Financially, the colonial railways were expected to attain a sufficient rate of return to allow for running expenses, 0.6 per cent repayment and 4.0 per cent interest charges on the initial investment, together with a financial reserve.

Deutsche Bahn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railways; abbreviated DBAG or simply DB) is Germany's main railway operator, providing passenger and freight services.
Originally, it was hoped for that privatisation and of the state railways and opening of German tracks to other railway companies would promote competition and efficiency, and eventually lead to higher standards and lower costs.
With the German rail network being the second most dense in the world (only surpassed Switzerland), DB has a quasi-monopoly on most passenger services.

German Railways relies on herbicides to clear vegetation on 72,000km of railway lines, and is the country’s biggest single user of herbicides on uncultivated land, overseeing the use of 250 tonnes of chemicals per year.
German Railways claims, on the evidence of (unpublished) freelance studies, that herbicide pollution of groundwater can occur directly through cracks in the soil or through fissures in vertical structures that are opened up by trains passing over at speed.
The attitude of German Railways makes it unlikely that there will be a total withdrawal of herbicides in the future as it merely hopes for a wider spectrum of effective chemicals to become available.

Leipzig-Dresden Railway Line - Growing German interest in railways
They were "strongly of the opinion that railways should take in civil engineering a far reaching share that until now has been little cultivated." However the nature of the early railways was so varied in Britain that they felt it was difficult to express a general statement on their practicality.
This railway was the first in the world to use steam locomotive power and Robert Stephenson's celebrated 'Locomotion No 1', along with 'Hope', 'Black Diamond' and 'Diligence' would have been hauling coal trains along the track when the two Germans were there.
One German industrialist, Friedrich Harkort, had built a coal-carrying railway using horses in 1830 near Düsseldorf and wrote a pamphlet in favour of major railway building from Köln and Minden in 1833.

 German and Austrian Signalling
The first Austrian steam railway was the Kaiser Ferdinand Nordbahn, opening in 1836 from Vienna towards Brünn in Slovakia, a small segment of the important route from the Adriatic port of Triest to the North Sea.
German signals are usually placed to the right of the track, 3100 mm from the nearest rail, or directly over the track governed on a signal bridge, and the semaphore arms point to the right.
In spite of this, when German railway engineers were looking for some kind of advanced signal, a disc was chosen, in order to be as much unlike a semaphore stop signal as could be.

The Role of Railways In The War
FROM the earliest days of their introduction railways have been regarded as offering the most efficient means for meeting the special needs of military transport in time of war; and, in becoming a new arm in modern warfare, they have helped to alter its scope and character.
While, however, the use which may be made of railways in war is great, varied, and 'comprehensive, much practical and even disastrous experience established the fact that this use was only likely to be efficient when the employment of railways for military transport had been the subject of well-planned organisation in time of peace.
The railway policy thus adopted by Germany in Asia and Africa must, in the circumstances here narrated, be taken into account no less than what we have already seen she was doing in the same direction in Europe.

RedOrbit - Technology - German Railways to Tighten Security, Increase Video Monitoring at Stations
Berlin: German Railways is tightening its security measures: video monitoring of railway stations will be expanded on a large scale; the federal police should be increasingly present at platforms and the new headquarters in Berlin should coordinate the security tasks.
Thanks to video cameras at railway stations, last year, 703 crimes were registered, 536 suspects identified, and 411 offences cleared up; 772 times, "measures" were taken "to avert dangers," the interior minister reported.
Moreover, the federal police (31,600) should be more clearly present at railway stations in the future - wearing their blue uniform, instead of the green one, which has been used to date.
