  Texas German - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Texas German is a dialect of the German language that is spoken by descendants of German immigrants who settled in the Texas Hill Country region in the mid-19th century.
German immigrants began arriving over a period of two years, quickly raising the population of the town to over 1,000.
Most German Texans continued to speak German in their homes and communities, but were required to learn English when Texas education rules mandated English-only instruction during and after World War I.

Nevertheless, the story of German immigration to Texas remains an anomaly in the history of German immigration to the United States.
He is credited with founding two cities: the first was the port-of-entry for German immigrants named Carlshafen, later called Indianola, and finally wiped off the map by a succession of hurricanes; in 1845 Prince Carl and a few hundred settlers founded New Braunfels as a station on the way to the Fisher-Miller land.

As I got to know the German Texans as friends, students and colleagues, I was amazed: They were all rather conservative and traditional, even more so than Germans in Germany--or so it seemed to me. For many years, I puzzled over the nature of German-Texan communities.

Although there were a few Germans in Texas when the area was under Spanish and Mexican rule, the first permanent settlement of Germans was at Industry, in Austin County, established by Friedrich Ernst and Charles Fordtran in the early 1830s.
Some of the names are German and some are English because some of these were places originally settled and named by Anglo-Americans from the United States but later settled by German immigrants and some of them were founded by Germans.
German settlers of this period were not only the poor and deprived peasants, but also members of the craftsman, merchant and professional classes.

Twenty-one of the ruling German princes also recognized the need to reduce the overpopulation of the Germanies, and to that end, they organized the "Mainzer Adelsverein," later shortened to "Adelsverein." About 20 Germans from Jefferson County served in the Confederate Army, including four Block brothers from Port Neches, even though their father was a Unionist who refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.

The courts of the German princes, too, suffered badly under Napoleon, and in order to reestablish their elegance and extravagance, the rulers levied what was perhaps the heaviest taxation ever known.
By the time of the liberal Revolts of 1848, many of the German elite classes - bankers, professors, and noblemen - ended up on the wrong side of the political fences, and among the German "Forty-Niners" who scurried off to Texas in 1849 were enough "grafs" (counts), princes, and barons to stock Buckingham Palace.
Of the first German Pilgrims to Texas in 1845, however, only one in four survived the walk from Indianola to New Braunfels, and the reader can still find on microfilm the original account from which this story is based, taken from the memoirs of one of the German Pilgrims, who made that march.

With the accordion as their central instrument in their music, the German Texans had a significant musical influence on the Tejano communities who incorporated both their dancing and musical styles into their own cultures.

Two years later German musical soirées were held at Kessler's Arcade in Houston, and in 1840 Emil Heerbrugger gave recitals on violin, horn, and guitar, with piano accompaniment, at the Capitol.
Musical instruments among the Germans in early Texas were often of high quality: Heinrich Backofen, son of a prominent Darmstadt clarinet maker, brought "a whole chest" of instruments with him to Bettina in 1847.
Bands ranged from a single fiddler playing for dances in the 1840s to full concert ensembles by the 1880s and were often connected with the conductor's teaching activities, either in school or private studio.

The aim of the society was to create a new German presence in Texas and to establish a market for German industry while at the same time developing German maritime commerce.
