The Germans also developed a half-track lorry or cargo truck called the Maultier or Mule which was built mainly by Opel and based on the Opel Blitz 3 ton military truck, except the rear wheels were replaced by a pair of tracks.
German reconnaissance vehicles were armoured as well and the SdKfz 222 was a small light recon vehicle with 4 wheels and 20mm gun in a top turret.
The German "Holzmine" or "wooden mine" was an attempt to defeat the Allied metal detecting mine detectors.

During the Arcadia Conference from December 1941 to January 1942, the Allied leaders concluded that it was essential to keep Russia in the war.
The mission was unrealistic to begin with, since German plans largely relied on capturing Allied fuel dumps in order to keep their vehicles moving with the goal of capturing the vital port of Antwerp, and thus crippling the Allies in the Battle of the Bulge.
During the war the Germans produced various Glide bomb weapons, which were the first smart bombs; the V-1 flying bomb, which was the first cruise missile weapon; and the V-2 rocket, the first ballistic missile weapon.

During the last years of World War I, the British employed the barrage balloon in response to attacks by German Gotha bombers on London.
Although airfields also requested them during the early months of the war, the balloons were not available because of slow production and losses due to combat and bad weather.
During the height of the Blitz, 102 aircraft struck cables, resulting in 66 crashed or forced landings.

 Artillery Communications
TYPES OF Radio, or wireless as it was called in WW2, was only one of four main communications 'technologies' in use at the outbreak of WW2 all were used by artillery.
Intercept of German wireless traffic in 1914 had led to a rapid British victory in West Africa and the compromise of their own plans through telephone intercept by the Germans, most notably at the Somme in 1916, was an influential experience.
Production of Nos 9 and 11 stopped in 1942, although the No 11 remained in artillery use throughout the war in the counter bombardment and survey units, including radio link sound ranging.

During the Pacific war, the strategy of "island hopping" turned islands into forward operating bases for the aircraft of the US Marine Corps, the US Navy and the Army Air Force.
Kill claims are almost invariably too high: Repeated firing on the same aircraft, the confusion of a fast-moving battle, overestimation of damage done to the enemy, and over-confidence of the pilots usually produce estimates which are at least a factor two too high.

 Messerschmitt Bf 109
In 1938, during the production of the C version, Messerschmitt's global reputation has grown to the point where the Air Ministry suggested changing his company's name from Bayerische Flugzeugwerke to Messerchmitt A.G. Subsequent aircraft would be identified with the "Me" prefix; those already in production, the 109, would retain the "Bf" designator.
During the ensuing “Phony War” on the Western Front, a hapless Luftwaffe pilot set his 109E down on the wrong side of the lines.
Early on the Bf 109 ranged freely while the Me 110's shepherded the bombers, but when the "shepherds" were mauled as badly as their flock by the RAF wolves, the Bf 109's were called on.

TAMIYA 1/35 German Self Propelled Howitzer "Wespe": TM35200
When German Forces encountered the harsh Russian winter and superiority of Soviet tanks on the Eastern Front during WW2, they rushed to develop new equipment immediately.
The gun was the standard light field howitzer used by German artillery forces at the time, and the Panzer II had been already proven reliable with its cross-country ability.
Officially named the "Wespe" (Wasp in German), its production began in February 1943, and although originally intended as a stopgap weapon, it remained in production until September 1944 with 676 produced.

German Bombers of World War II   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Production exceeded 7300 and for lack of a suitable replacement the Heinkel He 111 made up the bulk of German "heavy" bomber forces for almost the entire war.
Production eventually reached 1730 of all types including 1366 bombers (520 of these were Do 217K/Ms.) Small numbers of the Do 217J were supplied to Italy.
This latter version was the last to serve with the Luftwaffe (bombers being afforded low priority during the last year of the war), but many interesting projects continued to be pursued, including the conversion of He 177V38 as a carrier of Germany's atomic bombs, which in the event did not materialise.

Unreal Aircraft - Weird Wings - The Third Reich's Flying Saucers
There are recurring tales of the development of disc-shaped aircraft by the German Reich during World War 2.
The claim is that he was deeply impressed by the concept and became something of a supporter of the military development of disc-shaped aircraft, apparently overlooking the pathetic performance of the competition models.
A German official recorded that, at the Prag-Gbell aerodrome in August/September 1943, he and a good number of flying companions saw inside a hangar "a disk some 5-6 meters in diameter.

Production was expected to reach eight per month from each assembly line by mid-1941.
The German occupation of France had frustrated this plan, and it therefore become necessary to consider a British or German engine.

Enemy Aircraft of WW1 that acted against Australians
At the outbreak of war in Europe on 4 August 1914 Tauben were already in service with the air forces of Italy, Germany and Austro-Hungary as observation and training aircraft, and many later-famous German pilots learned to fly on aircraft of this type.
The Taube was a stable aircraft with pleasant flying characteristics, and considering that it was already four years old when war broke out, its performance for 1914-15 was not at all bad.
Another feature of the Gotha G-IV was a 'tunnel' in the bottom of the tail, that made it possible for the tail gunner to cover the lower rear of the aircraft, making it a most difficult aircraft to successfully attack.

Army Air Forces in World War II
During Big Week, February 20-26, 1944, the Allies flew heavily escorted missions against airframe manufacturing and assembly plants and other targets in numerous German cities, including Leipzig, Brunswick, Gotha, Regensburg, Schweinfurt, Augsburg, Stuttgart, and Steyr.
Together they dropped roughly 10,000 tons of bombs and seriously disrupted German fighter production, denying the enemy hundreds of aircraft at a time when they were badly needed.
Although this enabled the enemy to continue fighter airframe production, it rendered the industry extremely vulnerable to systematic attacks on the transportation network.

Again, the Germans congratulated themselves on being militarily superior to their enemies, and neglected to push design and production aggressively.
What had happened was that the German military was so obsessed with getting the highest quality weapons possible that they constantly asked for improvements to be made to existing designs, disrupting production.
It is amazing to note, for example, that during the war, no less than 425 aircraft models and variants were intorduced.

The story of the development of this aircraft is that of official disinterest, with Hitler curtailing all long-term research in 1940, and later at Hitler's personal insistence that the futuristic fighter be the new Blitz bomber.
Because it was designed first as a fighter, the conversion to the bomber role took time.
It was possible that this aircraft could have been in service earlier in the war, but because of Hitler's lack of technical knowledge, his personal meddling in the project and the fuel shortage kept this aircraft from entering service in greater numbers.
