The German goal, according to this statement to the workers, was 'victory, victory and still again victory and therewith the complete destruction of England and the domination of her money bags over the rest of the people on the globe.

The German press caused anxiety in Norway during the first weeks of April by asserting that the German Schwabenland expedition had discovered this territory, but the Reich made no official protest against Norway's claims.
The following day the German Government protested vigorously at Oslo, but the Norwegian Government on Nov. 5 rejected the German note and announced two days later that the 18 officers and men of the German crew would be placed in a concentration camp at Kongsvinger Castle for the duration of the war.
Norway was host to three important international meetings during August: Aug. 14-20, the Thirty-fifth Conference of the Inter-parliamentary Union, at Oslo; Aug. 25-30, the Twelfth International Studies Conference, at Bergen; and Aug. 30-31, a meeting of the Scandinavian Foreign Ministers, at Oslo.

After the start of World War II, it was renamed from Deutschland to Lützow in November, 1939 because Adolf Hitler feared that it might be sunk in the imminent invasion of Norway, causing a significant psychological and propoganda defeat if a ship with such a name were lost.
In February, 1940 it was re-classified as a heavy cruiser, and in April of that year it participated in the invasion of Norway.

It was planed to do this conversion after the construction of the next generation of battleships (Battleship F & G) in 1940, but the start of the war prevented this.
Battleship D, later called Scharnhorst, was laid down in May 1935 at the Kriegsmarine Shipyard in Wilhelmshaven and commissioned in January 1939.
The sister ship Gneisenau (Battleship E) was laid down in March 1935 at the Deutsche Werke in Kiel and commissioned in May 1938.

At the time of the bombing vessels of the Republican fleet had been sighted by the German Panzerschiff, whose first reaction was that the attack had been carried out by the Republican destroyer flotilla.
At 5pm the funeral procession of the 24 German Naval ratings went through the Dockyard North Gate with the coffins draped with the Nazi German Flags and carried, two to a lorry, on motor vehicles provided by the Royal Army Service Corp. A Royal Naval Guard from HMS Arethusa escorted each lorry.
The attack on the Deutschland and the deaths caused a flurry of international political activity and on 11th June the ship returned to Gibraltar to pick up 20 sailors who were fit to travel and the bodies of those who had died and who had been disinterred.

The Deutschland was renamed Lutzow by order of Hitler in Feb./40.
The Deutschland/ /Lutzow was the luckiest of the pocket battleships Germany constructed.
This is an excellent representation of the infamous German raiders that were dubbed "pocket battleships." Italeri/ Testor's also offered a 1/700 Graf Spee that is eerily similar to this kit however the Fujimi offering is molded much more crisply.
