The German Battleship Scharnhorst was built at Marinewerft (renamed Kreigsmarinewerft in 1935) in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
The armament of the Scharnhorst consisted of nine main 28.3 cm (11.1") guns which were mounted in three triple turrets and a secondary armament comprising eight 15 cm (5.9") guns housed in twin turrets and four 15 cm (5.9") guns which were single mounted.

German battlecruiser Scharnhorst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Her armour was equal to that of a battleship and if it hadn't been for her relatively small-calibre guns she would have been classified as a battleship by the British.
Scharnhorst's nine 280 mm (11 inch), main guns, though possessing long range and quite good armor-penetration power because of their high muzzle velocity, were no match for the 380 mm (15 inch) guns of most of the battleships of her day, particularly with the flooding and technical problems that were experienced.
Scharnhorst's first wartime operation was a sweep into the Iceland-Faroes passage in late November 1939 with Gneisenau in which she sank the British Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Rawalpindi.

 TREATY BATTLESHIPS
German naval rearmament after World War I was constrained by the Treaty of Versailles, which initially limited German battleships to 10,000 tons and 11 inch main battery guns.
Scharnhorst's lookouts spotted the pair of destroyers to port, and she engaged them with her secondary battery, but the starboard pair got to within one mile before being spotted, and put a torpedo into her.
All of the treaty battleships were heavily compromised to a greater or lessor extent by the need to at least nominally conform to the limitations of the various international naval arms limitation treaties.

The battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst and the battlecruisers Admiral Scheer and Admiral Hipper were a force in being that, while never attaining its potential for destruction on the convoy routes, did serve effectively to tie down a powerful segment of the British Home Fleet through a good part of the war.
The German battleship Scharnhorst, which had lurked in Norwegian fjords for years threatening convoys, was finally lured to her destruction off the north coast of Norway in December of 1943.
This mighty battleship was screening both northbound convoy JW55B and southbound convoy BA55A, one or both of which, in the opinion of the Admiralty, would be spotted by German submarine or air reconnaissance and would be too tempting, under conditions of the winter Arctic darkness, for the Germans to resist.

It was the 26,000-ton German battleship Scharnhorst, sniffing delicately with her intricate detector apparatus, pricking up her mechanical ears, hunting hungrily for a fat Allied convoy on the long haul to Murmansk with materiel for the Red Army.
The defeat virtually bankrupted the studied German policy of "the fleet in being"—a cautious hoarding of potential naval strength in safe Baltic or Norwegian bases, thus restricting the movements of Allied naval units nearly four times as strong, which had to be held near by to meet sudden sea raids.
The Scharnhorst's sister, Gneisenau; the so-called "pocket battleship" Admiral Scheer; the heavy cruisers Prinz Eugen and Admiral Hipper—all these have been damaged repeatedly by bombs and torpedoes, are of dubious fighting value.
